I spoke with mothers of Mill Valley softball players who are raising concerns about where next May’s state softball tournaments will be held.

They say parents and coaches were told softball tournament will take place at Blue Valley Recreation, with championships at KU, while baseball teams will play their regionals at the University of Kansas and Wichita State University.

Parents say that difference highlights a disparity between the sports, arguing the girls deserve the same opportunities and facilities as the boys.

I also spoke with the communications director for Kansas State High School Activities Association and officials from Blue Valley Recreation about recent safety concerns on the fields and whether they’re properly equipped to host tournaments from 1A through 6A.

Tune in tonight on FOX4 News Kansas City to hear their responses and learn what this could mean for high school softball in Kans

I’ve been focused on the stories of federal workers in Kansas City for the past 7 days.

The memo circulating the White House today is a legal opinion by the Office of Management and Budget.

This drafted memo brings concerns of back pay and if federal workers will get it after shutdown.

Today will be my last newscast with Charles Christian, and tomorrow… my last day at News-Press.

Before anything else, I have to start with gratitude. Steve Booher, Jess Dehaven and Gary Smith thank you for trusting me to anchor primetime news in this community. You welcomed me in not just as a journalist, but as part of a mission that truly cares about St. Joseph

Over my time here, I’ve stood on city sidewalks in the middle of breaking news, covered politics that shape our future, and sat down with neighbors who have shared their most personal stories. From foster care reform to the resilience of small businesses after hardship.

I’ve been there in early mornings at the COC breakfasts, late nights waiting for legislative votes, and even on Main Street talking to St. Joseph residents about issues that matter most to them.

I’ve had the privilege of telling the stories of our veterans, Cheerleaders, lawmakers, students, artists, greiving moms, the inventor of the trapper keeper. Heck. Even the Hardy Brothers and everyday people who do extraordinary things.

Each story wasn’t just an assignment…it really was a chance for me to connect, listen, and to make sure voices were heard.

Charles, working alongside you has been such a joy. Your professionalism, HUMOR, and warmth made every show better and I can truly count on you to be there for me!!

To the entire News-Press NOW team, thank you for challenging and supporting me. We have producers, designers, TDs and digital creators and reporters who are AMAZING!!!

To the community of St. Joseph: thank you for letting me into your homes and hearts. It’s been my honor to be your anchor. While my path is taking me forward to Kansas City, I will always carry St. Joseph with me. ALWAYS!!

With gratitude and love,
Kirsten Stokes
