KKFI 90.1FM has been the soundtrack to the KC region since 1988. Racial justice and social equality are not cause du jour's for us, it is the reason we are here. We have been talking the talk and walking the walk for decades and although it is progress to have these topics on the table, that just a start to the work that needs to be done. With your support we will further the conversations and keep everyone informed. Be it talk shows, music programs, shows about the arts scene. We are here everyday for you and because of you.

No gift is too small and your support is the reason we are able to be there for you 24/7 7 days a week. If you are able please visit kkfi.org/donate to see all of the options we provide for donations.

It takes a village around here. Thanks to the host of River Trade Radio, KKFI volunteer and union electrician Scott Stanton, who installed some LED lights and a dimmer switch in our new Production Studio 2. They’re bright and totally quiet! 🎙🎚💡📻

With your support, we continue to be the voice of the community.

KKFI celebrates 33 years on the air today, launched 1pm February 28, 1988 broadcasting Bob Dylan’s “When The Ship Comes In” 🚢 from founding member Tom Crane’s basement.

But the story began 11 years before with the formation of the Mid-Coast Radio Project. 📻

Learn all sorts of interesting pieces of KKFI’s history at kkfistory.org, created by Tom, who also hosts World Sound Radio Sundays at 1pm.

What does Kansas City jazz sound like today? Thankfully, it sounds like Marcus Lewis, Eddie Moore, Alaturka and so many more genre pushing artists. KKFI 90.1 FM is proud to amplify their sound with our 100,000 watts of community radio power.

BUT, we can't do it without your support. Call 888-931-0901 or go online at kkfi.org/donate and make a donation to YOUR community radio station.

Tune in 1-3pm to hear this great music, plus Chick Corea, Tivon Pennicott and more. We'll be joined (on the phone) by Marcus as well as former guest DJ Jeff Morgan from Morgan Miller Plumbing.

Happy Birthday Jay McShann!

Happy Birthday Jay McShann!

Jazz pianist Jay McShann was born on this day in 1909 in Muskogee, Oklahoma! For those who know Kansas City jazz, McShann and his musical groups, including the Jay McShann Orchestra and The Blue Devils, were essential to building the city's jazz legacy. He gave Charlie Parker his first big break by touring across the Midwest as a territory band; he'd play at countless jam sessions at Mutual Musicians Foundation; and, one of the most important highlights, he was one of the main ambassadors of the museum when it first opened in 1997 and continued to assist its growth up to his passing in 2006.

One of his pianos sits in our permanent exhibit and he's featured three separate times on our wall of musicians inside The Blue Room. His spirits lingers on throughout our beautiful spaces and through one of our museum's documentaries, "Jazz Is."

Similar to our last post about saxophonist/flautist Frank Wess last week, we know there's been a lot going on in our country and we want to remind you: we are here. We are here as a space of education, entertainment, and enjoyment. Whether you come to us for a COVID-19 friendly visit or engage with our digital resources, we hope you can find some peace with us soon 🎷🏛️
