Nearing the halfway point of the season, here are the Royals' current team stat rankings across the American League. It comes as no surprise: the pitching has been elite, and the offense has been… well, awful. But when you realize the offense has actually been worse than the White Sox and Rockies, it really puts into perspective just how incredible this pitching staff has been.
Even after losing Hunter Harvey and seeing Lugo, Erceg, and Ragans all spend time on the IL, the team has managed to plug the gaps with young talent like Noah Cameron and Steven Cruz, both of whom have stepped up in a major way.
Heading into the season, I expected the pitching to take a slight step back—it would've been unreasonable to expect Lugo, Ragans, and Wacha to repeat their 2024 performances. And yet… we've somehow improved. Meanwhile, the offense has regressed from its already mediocre form last season.
Despite Maikel Garcia being the most statistically improved hitter in the MLB and making a legitimate case for an All-Star nod, Vinnie Pasquantino turning his season around by hitting over .320 since May, and Bobby Witt Jr. continuing to be Bobby… this is still one of the worst Royals offenses in franchise history.
Just imagine where this team would be with even an average offense—absolutely dominant.
I don’t think Jac Caglianone is going to save us. I don’t think firing Zumwalt will magically fix things. I believe this team needs outside help, and not just a single bat—we need two legitimate outfield bats to seriously contend.
