Kansas City watched local businesses get left out of the 2023 NFL Draft. The city made sure that does not happen during the World Cup.

Over 463 businesses applied. The city selected around 20 local small businesses, artists, and food spots and placed them into empty storefronts across downtown, the Crossroads, 18th and Vine, River Market, Midtown, and Westport. They just opened June 1.

Each one gets a subsidized lease, up to $10,000 in grants, and support to make it work. This is not a pop-up. This is a real launchpad for KC businesses to grow.

Mayor Quinton Lucas at the launch: "We are not going to have the same stories we had after previous events in this city, where we heard small businesses were left out."

Hollywood is back on the Plaza. Terrence Howard, the Oscar nominee from "Hustle & Flow," "Empire," and "Iron Man," has been filming a new movie at the historic Skelly Building this week. It is reportedly titled "Broken One" and co-stars Kate Bosworth, though nothing official has been announced yet.

Fans have been catching selfies with him all over the Plaza, and by every account he could not be more down to earth. One person even got him filling up a Panera coffee cup on a break.

This is the second summer in a row a film crew has set up on the Plaza. Ted Lasso shot here last year.

Who is hoping to run into him this week?

Rebekah Arwood just graduated from UMKC School of Law. She did not walk the stage alone. Her seven-year-old golden retriever Nugget walked with her and was awarded his own "Juris Dogtor" degree. He sat through two full years of classes. Every single one.

Nugget helps Arwood manage chronic depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Professional service dog training costs $15,000 or more. Arwood did not have the money or the time. She trained him herself, six to eight hours a day that summer, and he has been by her side ever since.

He became the most popular dog at UMKC. She is an introvert. He changed that.

Now she is studying for the bar. When she passes, Nugget will be in the courtroom with her.

"Just because my disability isn't physical doesn't mean it's not real.”

As Kansas City prepares to welcome visitors for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Andre’s Confiserie Suisse has introduced a special collection of chocolates and quiches inspired by the countries participating in or staying in the city during the tournament.

The locally owned chocolatier spent months developing unique flavors that reflect ingredients commonly found in each nation’s cuisine, including Austrian-inspired hazelnut and apricot chocolate and an Ecuador-themed passion fruit variety.

The collection also features handcrafted soccer-themed chocolates, specialty quiches, and a Kansas City-inspired dark chocolate bar created in partnership with Q39.

Andre’s says the goal is to celebrate both the international spirit of the World Cup and the local flavors that make Kansas City unique, with some products potentially remaining available even after the tournament concludes.

A new venue in Kansas City's Crossroads Arts District is redefining nightlife by combining live jazz, food, and alcohol-free beverages in a welcoming social setting.

Cafe 333, located in the former Cafe Gratitude space, was opened by recovery coach and entertainment entrepreneur Cory Martin with the goal of creating a place where people can enjoy music and connect without alcohol.

The club features nightly performances from local jazz, blues, folk, and comedy acts, along with a menu of creative mocktails, botanical nonalcoholic spirits, and shareable dishes.

Martin, who also founded Social Cabaret, hopes the venue will support local artists while offering a new kind of entertainment experience.

Cafe 333 plans to operate Tuesday through Saturday evenings, with future plans to add coffee service and expanded hours.
