Tune in this Friday September 5 at 10 am Central on KKFI 90.1 FM and help celebrate the beginning of YEAR 16 of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show! I'll be debuting the new (and first ever) official theme song for the show penned by our friends Weary Ramblers and welcoming back to the program Deanna Ray!

Deanna Ray will be debuting her new Americana single on the program and sharing highlights of her recent stint with Santa Fe Opera!

In the summer of 2025, Deanna made her debut as Rossweisse in the company premiere of Wagner’s Die Walküre at The Santa Fe Opera, where she was a first-year apprentice singer. While at Santa Fe, Deanna also covered the role of Countess Ceprano in Rigoletto and appeared in the chorus of La bohème.

Prior to her work with Santa Fe, Deanna appeared with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City as Gertrude in Roméo et Juliette and Flosshilde in Journey to Valhalla, a compendium of Wagner’s Ring Cycle compiled by conductor Michael Christie.

In 2024, Deanna graduated with a double MM degree in Voice Performance and Church Music (Choral Conducting) from the University of Kansas. During her vocal study there, she worked with legendary mezzo-soprano Joyce Castle. There, she performed as Little Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore and as La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica before being hired as an Apprentice Artist with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, where she performed in the choruses of Carmen, La traviata, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, and The Sound of Music. Deanna also appears as a chorister on the GRAMMY® nominated recording of The Shining by Mark Campbell and Paul Moravec, performed and recorded by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City in 2023 before its release on Pentatone in 2024.

Deanna is also a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa school of music, where she attained a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Under the tutelage of technician Dr. Jean McDonald and coach Dr. Korey Barrett, Deanna performed the role of Arsamene in Handel’s Serse, as well as scenes from La Cenerentola (Angelina), Béatrice et Bénédict (Béatrice), La Clemenza di Tito (Sesto), and The Merry Wives of Windsor (Meg Page).

Next week will mark the debut of the Weary Ramblers penned theme song for the Show celebrating beginning my Sweet Sixteenth year hosting a weekly radio show! Joining me on this week's show is Tica Perri, an artist who submitted an entry for theme song consideration. Although not ultimately chosen, I enjoyed discovering Tica's work and am honored to welcome her to the airwaves to have a conversation and share her music with our listeners.

Music/Musician Friends!

KKFI 90.1 FM needs your help getting some more bands, singer-songwriters, duos, marching bands, or whatever to submit for the upcoming band auction! Right now, they are full up on rock and roll bands, but would love to see more jazz, reggae, folk, hip-hop, blues, world, classical, and Americana. If you know anything about or ever listen to my Tasty Brew Music Radio, MidCoast LIVE! or Siren Song FM on KKFI, you know I do my best to present live music from the Heartland focusing on Americana/Bluegrass/Country/Roots Music.

From Kelly Dougherty, KKFI Development Director:
“At the end of September, KKFI will be doing another band auction (solo, duos, bands and everything in between) to help fund the station! We want to make sure that it is a diverse offering that reflects the music played on the station and also represents the Kansas City music community.
Here's the lowdown. The event will take place on Sept 26, 27, and 28 at KKFI. We will have the live performance studio set up with professional sound that is run back into the on-air studio. Buzz Collins will be doing sound engineering. We also have Jay Lindhorst in-house running a Facebook live stream. Each band or artist will play 25 minutes on air while listeners are calling in to bid on a 2-hour performance from the band/artist. KKFI will split the bid 80/20 (KKFI 80/Artist 20) once the performance for the winning bidder has been completed. Each band/artist will receive a recording of the on-air performance and will be able to use the live stream recording that will be posted on the KKFI YouTube page shortly after the band auction. Here is a link to the band auction from earlier this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Exajb7-b9_s

We know and understand how important your time and talent are, and we do not take this ask lightly. We also know that you know that community radio is essential to the survival of independent artists. KKFI is a place for all local artists! We appreciate you, and we want to make sure that your music and your voice will be heard for years to come.

If you are interested in being part of the band auction and want to learn more, go to https://kkfi.org/support/band-auction-2025/

Feel free to share this with other bands and artists.”

I'm so honored to welcome Grammy award winning Max Baca of Los Texmaniacs to the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show this Friday August 22 on KKFI 90.1 FM in the 11 am Central Hour! The band is in town for a Friday Night show at The Ship. I have been given the heads up one of our topics for conversation will be the legacy of another Grammy award winner,Flaco Jimenez, who recently passed away after a long and storied career.

Combine a hefty helping of Tex-Mex conjunto, simmer with several parts Texas rock, and add a daring dash of well-cured blues and R&B riffs, and you’ve cooked up the tasty Los Texmaniacs groove. Max Baca is a legend on the bajo sexto, a twelve-string guitar-like instrument, and his nephew, Josh Baca, is fast attaining legendary status on the accordion, with those two instruments creating the core of the lively conjunto sound. Los Texmaniacs are the new worldwide kings of Texas Roots music, feeding the masses with only the best in musical fare, cooked up from a wide-ranging experience touring and recording with Flaco Jimenez of Texas Tornados fame, Los Super Seven, and even the Rolling Stones. While Max Baca has participated in eleven Grammy-winning projects, the band themselves won their first Grammy in 2010 and a nomination for their last Smithsonian Folkways recording in 2019, Borders y Bailes - featuring Lyle Lovett and Rick Trevino.

I cannot believe my good fortune! Come Friday....it will be yours!

Big doins' on KKFI 90.1 FM tomorrow August 15! I will have two pairs of tickets to give away on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show for the Monday, August 18 Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road show at Waldo Folk. I will have a conversation with Kelsey Waldon in the 11 am Central Hour in advance of her show at Knuckleheads Kansas City Thursday August 21. I will be hosting MidCoast LIVE tomorrow at Noon Central with special in studio musical guest Kristin Hamilton!

Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road: Winning both industry awards and the hearts of fans across the world, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road lead listeners on a journey through their dynamic performances. Hailing from the small Appalachian town of Deep Gap, North Carolina, Purcell leans into his roots, including the legacy of Doc Watson, who lived less than a mile away, influencing the young picker through his powerful musicianship and storytelling. Along with the other brilliant musicians in Cane Mill Road, Liam blends tradition, innovation, and excellence into a truly one-of-a-kind musical experience.

Kelsey Waldon: In the six years since she signed to John Prine’s Oh Boy Records, Kelsey Waldon has earned wide praise for her “self-penned compositions [with] the patina of authenticity” (Rolling Stone). On her new album, Every Ghost, she confronts addiction, grief, generational trauma, and even herself — and comes through it stronger and at peace.
“There’s a lot of hard-earned healing on this record,” Waldon says of the nine-song project, recorded at Southern Grooves studio in Memphis with her band, The Muleskinners.

Kristin Hamilton: Kristin Hamilton is a Kansas City singer songwriter whose voice has been described as one that "stirs the soul". Her music is folk country tinged with the sweet flavor of bluegrass. Kristin's original music touches on topics of family & faith, grief & gratitude and will leave you with a warm heart.

Kristin Hamilton, formerly of Under The Big Oak Tree currently performs as a solo artist, as a duo with her daughter Lucy Gray, and with her star-studded honkytonk band, The Heat.

syllable of the song for twists

coming...because you can’t."

So sweetie...ya say ya wanna be a DJ?

Back in the late 1960’s fresh out of high school, I went to the local brand spanking new FM radio station and asked to train and become a DJ. I was that music nerd that loved reading liner notes and was the “go to” person in school if you wanted to know who sang what song and who were the members of a particular band. I listened to the radio whenever I could, like we all did, and I could “see” myself being on the radio. I was not encouraged to pursue being a DJ by that radio guy, but was told something along the lines....“Sweetie, if you can type and make coffee, we have a job for you.” I said no thank you and went on my way for the intervening decades to type and make coffee for lawyers. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have taken that radio station office gig (I still can type like the wind) and as times changed....worked myself into the on air studio. Oh well... fast forward 40 plus years and here I am on the radio and podcasting and loving every minute “on the air” just like I knew I would. Tasty Brew Music is a labor of love to share my passion for Americana/Bluegrass/Country/Roots Music ... an attempt to curate the content that comes to me in these genres via music, live performances, photos, links and stories. I am a member of the Americana Music Association and Folk Alliance International. The views and opinions expressed on the radio show and on my Podcast, Tasty Brew Music, are mine alone and those of my guests. I welcome comments, suggestions for music and other interactions to highlight on my programs. The goal - to educate and uplift our collective spirits by promoting the creativity of the singers, songwriters and musicians in this community. As John Hartford said “Turn your radio on and listen to the music in the air....”
