Big doins' on KKFI 90.1 FM tomorrow August 15! I will have two pairs of tickets to give away on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show for the Monday, August 18 Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road show at Waldo Folk. I will have a conversation with Kelsey Waldon in the 11 am Central Hour in advance of her show at Knuckleheads Kansas City Thursday August 21. I will be hosting MidCoast LIVE tomorrow at Noon Central with special in studio musical guest Kristin Hamilton!

Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road: Winning both industry awards and the hearts of fans across the world, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road lead listeners on a journey through their dynamic performances. Hailing from the small Appalachian town of Deep Gap, North Carolina, Purcell leans into his roots, including the legacy of Doc Watson, who lived less than a mile away, influencing the young picker through his powerful musicianship and storytelling. Along with the other brilliant musicians in Cane Mill Road, Liam blends tradition, innovation, and excellence into a truly one-of-a-kind musical experience.

"Making their mark on bluegrass and fueling the future" - Bluegrass Unlimited

Kelsey Waldon: In the six years since she signed to John Prine’s Oh Boy Records, Kelsey Waldon has earned wide praise for her “self-penned compositions [with] the patina of authenticity” (Rolling Stone). On her new album, Every Ghost, she confronts addiction, grief, generational trauma, and even herself — and comes through it stronger and at peace.
“There’s a lot of hard-earned healing on this record,” Waldon says of the nine-song project, recorded at Southern Grooves studio in Memphis with her band, The Muleskinners.

Kristin Hamilton: Kristin Hamilton is a Kansas City singer songwriter whose voice has been described as one that "stirs the soul". Her music is folk country tinged with the sweet flavor of bluegrass. Kristin's original music touches on topics of family & faith, grief & gratitude and will leave you with a warm heart.

Kristin Hamilton, formerly of Under The Big Oak Tree currently performs as a solo artist, as a duo with her daughter Lucy Gray, and with her star-studded honkytonk band, The Heat.

for lunch. The end result feels
like hanging out in your
favorite bar, drinking a cold

coming...because you can’t."
-Sara Hickman

UPDATE: YOU DID IT! We/you raised $1900+ this morning for community radio. Thank you from the bottom of my bustin' with relief heart!

Friends and listeners of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show. I have one show to do with a $1500 goal this Friday from 10 am until Noon Central for this KKFI Summer 2025 Pledge Drive. I wrestled whether to do a FB Fundraiser again this time but so many other DJs are doing one this time, I decided to punt. I understand there a good number of causes and crowd funding projects in play right now; I myself donated to three crowd funds and two flood relief efforts so far this month. It takes a village.

I’m once again asking the village for support. The village includes friends, family, musicians, venues, and organizations I have supported, debuted and showcased for the last 15 years as a volunteer broadcaster. If you cannot tune in this Friday, July 18, 2025 while I’m on the air between 10 am and Noon Central, you can still support the show’s goal by noting on your online or text entry that you would ask your donation be in support of The Tasty Brew.

Joining me on this week’s show are Chuck and Phil from the Waldo Folk Listening Room Series. https://www.waldofolk.com

You can donate online here: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/2sopct

You can donate via text following the instructions in the photo below.

Thank you for supporting me all these years on The Tasty Brew Music Radio Show!

KKFI 90.1FM Summer Pledge Drive is going on! Go to KKFI.org and click on the Donate button in the top right-hand corner to donate. Please support your Community Radio Station!!

Danielle Anderson aka Danielle Ate the Sandwich is a very talented artist. She recently filled in as host for the Heartland Song Network’s monthly song salon (The Song Sanctuary) at Kansas City’s PH Coffee. A gentleman named Jesse Jack Sample from Toronto, KS attended and blew everyone, including Danielle, away with his amazing contributions to the afternoon. She immediately contacted me as she thought Jesse was a great candidate for inclusion on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show’s rotation. She was right and with some back and forth, we were able to come up with a date for Jesse to come in and share his stories with our KKFI audience.

Sample began his musical journey in the Wichita rock scene but then paused to raise a family and live a quieter life. In recent years he’s found himself living in Toronto, Kansas a place more in tune with the country sounds heard on his album “King of the Plains.”

For a time he operated a bait shop/music venue in Toronto, a difficult venture to sustain in a small town. Building an audience is difficult within an urban center; super challenging from a place like Toronto, KS. Tune in this Friday, June 27, 2025 from 10 am to Noon Central to hear Jesse live in the studio during the 11 am hour (he’s bringing his fiddle and bass player).

This week I’m also featuring music from the Americana Music Association’s 2025 nominees for Best Emerging Artist, new offerings from Lukas Nelson’s debut solo album, James McMurtry, and much more!

Fantastic music from the Heartland is on my mind for this week's shows. I'm also hosting MidCoast LIVE this Friday from Noon to 1 pm Central on KKFI 90.1 FM.

This week's Tasty Brew Music Radio Show guest in the 11 am Central Hour is Jesse Harris and joins me at Noon Central on MidCoast LIVE!

What will Jesse and I talk about?? Well, I'm hoping we chat about the remastered and soon to be re-released Gypsy Sparrows songs coming back out to streaming platforms!!! Or maybe with a little arm twisting Jesse will share details about the upcoming show he has with the original Gypsy Sparrow, Jeff Perkins, at the Shamrock Hills Vineyard and Winery amphitheater Saturday June 28th! He's bringing his guitar so there will be tuneage!

As for Flanner Laycock and Schrock... a full hour of performance with very little talking on MidCoast LIVE. This very talented Harrisonville, Mo based trio has a new record out that is on rotation at my home... check out Postcards from Gehenna, Missouri! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsY_Auqw9W8

So sweetie...ya say ya wanna be a DJ?

Back in the late 1960’s fresh out of high school, I went to the local brand spanking new FM radio station and asked to train and become a DJ. I was that music nerd that loved reading liner notes and was the “go to” person in school if you wanted to know who sang what song and who were the members of a particular band. I listened to the radio whenever I could, like we all did, and I could “see” myself being on the radio. I was not encouraged to pursue being a DJ by that radio guy, but was told something along the lines....“Sweetie, if you can type and make coffee, we have a job for you.” I said no thank you and went on my way for the intervening decades to type and make coffee for lawyers. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have taken that radio station office gig (I still can type like the wind) and as times changed....worked myself into the on air studio. Oh well... fast forward 40 plus years and here I am on the radio and podcasting and loving every minute “on the air” just like I knew I would. Tasty Brew Music is a labor of love to share my passion for Americana/Bluegrass/Country/Roots Music ... an attempt to curate the content that comes to me in these genres via music, live performances, photos, links and stories. I am a member of the Americana Music Association and Folk Alliance International. The views and opinions expressed on the radio show and on my Podcast, Tasty Brew Music, are mine alone and those of my guests. I welcome comments, suggestions for music and other interactions to highlight on my programs. The goal - to educate and uplift our collective spirits by promoting the creativity of the singers, songwriters and musicians in this community. As John Hartford said “Turn your radio on and listen to the music in the air....”
