Kirksville, Marshall, Mexico & Moberly will join their old foe Chillicothe in a new division (EAST DIVISION) in the Midland Empire Conference.

Since 1962, the conference has seen so many faces and will now hold a new division and NCMC conference rivals.

THIS is exciting news for the schools! It will be sad to see the NCMC no longer viable.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: North Platte rallied from down 14 in the second half to capture third place in Class 3 boys basketball, defeating Liberty 61-57 at Mizzou Arena on Saturday.

Liberty went on an 11-0 run to start the second half and built a 14-point lead with 4:05 left in the third quarter. North Platte did not score in the second half until the 3:36 mark of the third, when Jase Smith hit a 3-pointer that sparked a 16-3 run. By the end of the quarter, the Panthers cut the deficit to one point.

The fourth quarter saw seven lead changes before North Platte pulled away late. The Panthers used the free-throw line to ice the game in the final minutes, scoring eight points from the line in the final 1:04. The Panthers finished 15 of 18 from the line, with all makes coming in the fourth quarter.

North Platte made just two baskets from the field in the final quarter and scored 15 of its 19 fourth-quarter points on free throws.

Senior Brenden Matt led North Platte with 29 points in his final game with the Panthers. Matt scored more than 2,000 points in his high school career, reaching the milestone last weekend in the state quarterfinal against Windsor.

North Platte's Dylan Armstrong added 12 points and junior Isaac Wright had 10. Liberty’s top scorer was Parker Tune with 19 points.

The third-place finish caps a historic season for North Platte. The Panthers won their first district title since 2011 and just the second in program history. North Platte also won its first sectional and quarterfinal games to earn the program’s first state appearance.

β€œWe’re one of the two teams in Class 3 that can say they ended their season on a win,” said Panthers head coach Braydn Kemper.

Kemper said he hopes the trip to Columbia shows future North Platte teams that the Panthers can make postseason runs.

β€œAt Mid-Buchanan, I was a player for their first final four. Once we got that one, it opened the door and the program was like, β€˜Oh, we can do this.’ Then two years later Mid-Buchanan went back,” Kemper said in the postgame press conference. β€œOne of the things that I think this does is show we can do this.”

North Platte finished the season with a 27-5 (6-1) record.
