Kids tell technology a lot.

Sometimes because we ask. Sometimes without realizing it.

A name. A drawing. Something that happened at school. What they’re afraid of. Who they love. The little details that make their world theirs.

That context can make technology incredibly useful. It also deserves care.

We think the best experiences for kids shouldn’t just ask, “What can we do with this?”

They should ask, “Do we need it at all?”

That question shaped a lot of how we built Storytailor.

Because technology made for childhood should understand something about childhood too.

Some things are worth protecting.

A child in a hospital is still a child with favorite characters, strange ideas, inside jokes, questions, fears, and an imagination that does not stop at the edge of the bed.

That is part of what we are thinking about with Storytailor in pediatric care.
Families and care teams can use stories to help make unfamiliar experiences easier to understand before they happen, whether that means explaining a procedure in language a child can follow, giving shape to something that feels scary, or helping them know what to expect when so much around them feels new.

But not every story needs to explain something.

Sometimes a hospital room can become a spaceship, a jungle, or a castle. A favorite stuffed animal can become the hero. A long afternoon between appointments can become an adventure that belongs to the child instead of the schedule around them.

That is the role we hope Storytailor can play in these spaces: not replacing care, but giving families and care teams another way to support understanding, ease anxiety, and preserve some of the play, imagination, and agency that make childhood feel like childhood.

This is Ava.

She drew a little character and named her Squiggle.

One of the things we wanted to get right with Storytailor was making sure the things kids create don’t have to disappear when the paper gets put away.
So now, a child can draw a character, upload it to Storytailor, and turn that exact idea into a character they can keep coming back to.

Squiggle can show up in a ridiculous adventure one day, then help Ava explore a first day of school, a big feeling, a change at home, or something she doesn’t quite have the words for yet.

That’s what excites me about the Character Maker. Kids already communicate so much through the things they draw and imagine. Now we can take those characters seriously, give them a home, and let them become part of how we understand what’s going on in a child’s world.

It’s amazing how fast kids change. One week they’re obsessed with silly characters and moonwalking llamas, and the next, they’re asking deep questions about the world that catch you completely off guard. Their world is constantly expanding, and we believe the stories they interact with should expand right along with them.

At Storytailor, we use something called Adaptive Bibliotherapy to make sure our digital stories actually keep up with your child's growth. It’s a fancy name for a simple idea: a story for a three-year-old on a tablet should feel very different from a story for an eight-year-old on a computer. As your child’s vocabulary grows, our language matures. As their emotions get more complex, our themes dive deeper into things like bravery, curiosity, and kindness.

Whether they’re laughing at bo**er monsters or navigating big-kid milestones, every child deserves a hero who understands exactly where they are in the moment. Your child is changing every day; is their digital story world keeping up?

We talk a lot about the "Consistency Gap" because it’s a real problem with most generic AI stories. You know that feeling when your child sees themselves in a story and their face just lights up? Generic AI often ruins that moment by changing how the character looks halfway through the experience. One minute they have their favorite glasses or specific curls, and the next, they're gone. It might seem like a small technical error, but for a kid, it feels like they’ve been replaced. That’s why we created the Character Vault. At Storytailor, we make sure your child’s identity stays exactly the same throughout the entire adventure, whether they’re on a tablet, phone, or computer. When a child sees a consistent version of themselves being the hero, it builds a much deeper connection to the story and their own confidence. We believe that being seen isn't just a nice feature: it’s the whole point.

Watching a child use a neon pink dinosaur or an adopted hero to explore their world is the heart of what we’re after. The Children's Place are doing insanely important work in helping children hold on to their childhood.

Imagine being able to make a story come to life, designing yourself as the character down to every last freckle then creating an adventure, overcoming obstacles and rising to challenges that previously seemed impossible. Thanks to our friends at Storytailor, the children we serve have had a chance to do exactly this.

We've partnered with this new company and begun using Storytailor in classrooms and therapy playrooms for children who would benefit from the chance to create a story. Whether they design a character who looks just like them or is a neon pink dinosaur, our teachers and therapists can use this tool to help little ones explore their own real-life stories. One child recently made several stories in a therapy session, changing around many details, but every single time the child checked that his character was "adopted," helping him to explore his own life story.
