"It's important to recognize our veterans."

VFW Post 10131 in Cape Canaveral, Fla., held their second annual Veteran's Day parade this past weekend.

Stepping off at 11:11 a.m., the parade aimed to commemorate the WW1 armistice at 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Post 10131 Auxiliary member Mickie Kellum was a key organizer in the event. She wanted to stress the importance of "recognizing all veterans."

On this day in VFW Magazine history...

November 1990

Published just three months after the Gulf War began, this issue included an article that highlighted the effort of VFW Auxiliary in their project OPERATION HOMETOWN.

The project, which provided troops with care packages full of personal items including letters, cards and gifts from family, was designed to help boost troop morale.

Past Commander-in-chief Jim Kimery supported the project, citing parallels between the Gulf War and wars past:

"Most of our members remember when they served their country, thousands of miles from home, missing loved ones and friends. Often these times were more bearable because of cards, letters and small personal gifts from the states."

VFW saw support from several companies for this project, including Roosevelt Paper Co., Haband, Golden Books, Barnes-Noble Publishers and U.S.A. Buyers Network, which helped provide paper for writing tablets.

The issue also included articles that honored the service of WWI veterans and Armistice Day, which would later become Veteran's Day.
