What if money is leaving your shop and you don't even know it?

Your shop management system says one thing. QuickBooks says another. Vendor credits never get claimed. Parts invoices slip through the cracks. And in some cases, theft can go undetected for months, or even years.

In this episode of Business By The Numbers, Hunt Demarest sits down with Alex Saladna from WickedFile to discuss the hidden financial leaks that cost repair shops thousands of dollars every year.

You'll hear real stories from the field, including employees stealing cash, thousands of dollars in unexplained expenses, and how shop owners discovered they were losing 2-3% of revenue simply because nobody had visibility into the data.

More importantly, you'll learn how AI-powered reconciliation is helping shops automate 80-90% of their parts verification process, recover missed credits, and gain confidence that their numbers are actually accurate.

If you've ever assumed "that could never happen in my shop," this conversation is for you.

Congratulations, Craig O'Neill, on Milestone Episode 100 of "Speak Up! Effective Communication" on the Automotive Repair Podcast Network!

A note from Craig:
It is my great joy to welcome my friends and well-known podcasters, Lucas Underwood and David Roman as my guests on Episode 100!

Why is this special?

I had the distinct privilege and honor of being David and Lucas' guest for their 100th episode of the Changing The Industry Podcast.

Which is why today's word of the day is reciprocity.

The quality or state of being reciprocal: mutual dependence, action, or influence
In our conversation, we talk about… well… everything.

It’s kind of how things go with these two!

Technician pay, owner attentiveness, communication, anger, and social media.

Positive changes they've observed in the industry, as well as some of the trends and challenges that we're facing now, including human attention.

I particularly enjoyed getting their thoughts on the topic of altruism.

We wrapped up with some book recommendations.

At the end of the day, my favorite thing about this episode is that while, yes, we celebrate episode 100, I get to do so with people who I’ve celebrated with on theirs. Returning that gesture is a real joy.

I hope you enjoy listening in on this conversation and that you, too, feel like you're part of the conversation aligned towards positive change in our industry.

Sincerely,
Craig O’Neill

Many of the students who struggle in a traditional classroom aren't incapable; they're bored. They need to work with their hands, solve problems, and be challenged in a different environment.

You may discover that the "problem student" is actually your next success story.

Matt Fanslow starts on the golf course and ends up right back in the service bay, because apparently, even a decent round of golf can turn into a cognitive psychology lesson.

After shooting a personally strong nine-hole score, Matt catches himself doing what many technical and mechanical specialists do every day: ignoring the accomplishment and obsessing over the shots, tests, tools, or decisions that could have been better. That leads into a discussion of discounting the positive, upward counterfactual thinking, hindsight bias, expert bias, and the curse of knowledge.

The point is not to stop improving. The point is to stop rewriting reality after the fact. A two-hour intermittent short diagnosis may feel “obvious” once the problem is found, but it was not obvious when the vehicle came in. The same applies to repairs, removals, procedures, and every job where experience only becomes obvious after you earn it.

Matt also closes with some listener-driven Mount Rushmore talk, including an all-time basketball starting five featuring Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, LeBron James, and Hakeem Olajuwon.

“Why can’t both things be true? That was a good find, and next time I might do it faster.”

Is Altruism Real, or Is It All Self-Interest?

Craig O'Neill tackles a question that emerged during one of those memorable late-night industry conversations: Is true altruism possible, or is every act of kindness, generosity, and service ultimately motivated by self-interest?

Drawing from the ideas of philosophers and thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, Joseph Butler, John Locke, C.S. Lewis, and Dale Carnegie, Craig explores the long-running debate over human motivation and what it means for leadership, relationships, and communication.

What You'll Learn:
- The core arguments for and against the existence of true altruism
- How our beliefs about human nature influence leadership and decision-making
- The connection between altruism and Dale Carnegie's principle that every interaction leaves people better or worse
- Why understanding motivation can improve the way we communicate and serve others

Whether you conclude that altruism is real or simply another form of self-interest, the way you answer this question shapes how you view people, lead teams, and build relationships. This episode invites you to think deeply, challenge assumptions, and maybe even prepare for your next great late-night conversation with friends and colleagues.
