On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. That day became known as Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
At Wide Awake, it is a profound honor to help tell the stories of Black Americans whose experiences have shaped our nation's history. From stories of enslavement and emancipation to courage, resistance, achievement, and community, these narratives deserve to be told with care and authenticity. We are grateful to the Black actors, historians, crew members, and collaborators who make this work possible. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, talent, and perspective with us, and for the trust you have given us over the years.
Today, we reflect on the history Juneteenth represents and the responsibility we share in preserving and telling these stories for future generations.
