Taking Hinduism to the Imperial Court

As British society dismissed colonized cultures, a Sri Lankan lawyer earned the respect of England’s elite through intellect, character and faith
By Dr. Kusum Pant Joshi

Some might know that sir muthu Coomaraswamy Mudaliar (1834–1877) was the first Hindu to be called to the English Bar, the first South Asian to be knighted by Queen Victoria and also the father of renowned polymath, Dr. Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy. However, few know that he was a distinguished Hindu from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), who used his knowledge of English and Western ways to establish links with Britain’s upper crust and personally present diverse facets of Hindu thought, beliefs and culture to them. It is to his credit that he ventured to do so at a time when the West was not only generally ignorant about India, but was also severely biased against it.

Presenting a Hindu perspective on artificial intelligence as a divinely guided evolution leading humanity toward spiritual growth and inner realization
By Akash Katir, California

Do you ever worry about our future with advanced artificial intelligence? What will happen if we all lose our jobs to highly capable AI? Malicious programming or misuse could even result in the annihilation of all mankind. There are innumerable ways this technology could go wrong. It’s common for the average person to be anxious about it. However, in my opinion, as Hindus with our beliefs in God and the Gods as well as a divine purpose in life, we should be optimistic about our future with AI.

With Devaki Ma
By Erica Bassani

In the spring of 2024, while in tiruvannamalai, india, conducting interviews with teachers and leaders for the Women Awakening Project, I visited the Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashram. In its enormous atrium, I was struck by the plasterboard depiction of moments from the yogi’s life, an enlightened being who called himself “the beggar.”

In My Opinion: “A Saint's Inspiration” Loshini Rajentharan, 33, is a Hindu woman, psychiatrist, and Malaysian-bornn Tamil writer now living in the United Kingdom. In her article she shares her insights into how Arunagirinathar’s hymns are more than poetry; they are living testimony that grace can lift the human spirit, and that light can be found even after the longest shadows when faith is placed firmly in the divine. Say “bengaluru,” and most people picture a modern Indian metropolis of glass towers and tech campuses, a place of traffic, coffee shops and laptop-toting professionals. Yet right in the heart of this Silicon Valley of India stands a temple unlike any other—a living reminder that beneath the city’s velocity lie centuries of faith and the origins of the Kadalekai Parishe, the city’s iconic annual peanut festival. Here, in Basavanagudi, the oldest quarter of the city, which takes its very name from the bull, rises the Big Bull Temple, locally called Dodda Basavana Gudi. It is the only temple in the world where Basavana Nandi, the sacred mount of Siva, presides as the main Deity.

The Mystic Songs, Life and Profound Philosophy of a Tamil Sage
Main text by Dr. B. Natarajan • Art by Suresh Muthukulam

Decades ago, Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, the founder of Hinduism Today, was introduced to Dr. B. Natarajan, an economist, writer and scholar of Saiva Siddhanta, while traveling through Tamil Nadu. Dr. Natarajan had spent years translating the poems of Tayumanavarinto English. In time they grew close, and Dr. Natarajan gifted his work to the Satguru from Hawaii, knowing it would be shared with the world. For the past three years, Subramuniyaswami’s monks have been preparing an illustrated book of the saint’s 1,452 songs. That book, called Tayumanavar’s Songs to Siva, is excerpted here. We also recorded all the songs, sung by an odhuvar. (They can be listened to here: nall.ai/tayumanavarsongsaudio).
We begin with Dr. Natarajan’s first encounter with these marvelous songs.

How to stave off the debilities of old age
By Dr. Virender Sodhi

Rejuvenation is an ayurvedic specialty whose main purpose is to maintain health and virility as age advances. We all age, but we don’t need in the process to enter an era of disease. We can age gracefully and avoid diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, obesity and cancer.
