When I play, I like to divide my board into five territories: the four corners and the center. I try to maintain control of as many corner territories as I can as I move into the end game. However, the center is too chaotic and unpredictable. So once I have control of one corner, I focus my energy on the areas I don't control.

Lots of beginners jump around the board just moving pieces without any fundamental strategic approach. However, as a player gains more mileage on the board and understands how the pieces move, understanding territories will make sense and make a difference.

My collection: Wa`a
I brought this Papamū at a craft fair in Kapa`a, Kaua`i. I wanted my children to play Kōnane. My house was also the go-to house for the kids on my street, so it would be an activity for the neighborhood. I played a game with my kids called 3 to 1. After they finished their homework and chores before they could go out and play, they had to play me three matches of Kōnane, then they can go play. If they beat me one game, they can go. After the third game, they can go. This gave them an incentive to play hard. One great thing about investing in Kōnane is that I’ll pass this board down to my grandchildren and they, in turn, will pass it down to theirs. Notice the wa’a design etched into the wood. I’m not sure who was the artist, but it is a good board.

Kōnaneology 101 Gathering the Components (4)

As a member of the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce Hui. We had a Zoom meeting with all Native Chambers and other Hawaiian organizations to talk about Hawaiian owned businesses and how we can facilitate the flow of information and resources to our Hawaiian owned business as a result of Covid 19.

These Zoom type meetings are challenging unless the facilitator is skilled at keep order between the participants and giving everybody a chance to speak. The participants also have to show respect to the people and the process of the meeting. (no forget to mute the mic when you not talking)

The key to this meeting was to identify the sources of the information and how this information will flow to our target market.

In Kōnane, you cannot even begin to play unless you gather the components. Those components are the playing board, the playing pieces, the players and the process.

All of these component are resources and the key to being successful in playing Kōnane is understanding and managing these resources.

I’ve been to too many meetings where everyone is excited and panicking about an issue, jumping all over the place. That’s not how to play Kōnane.

In Kōnane, you take the time to identify your resources and understand who they are and what they can do. Then you implement your strategic plan knowing what they can do to help you be successful.

If you know of a Hawaiian Business out there who is not doing contract work for the government, give them a heads up. There are Hawaiian organizations and Native Hawaiian Chambers out there who are trying to get into the game to help.

Yesterday’s meeting went well. We have identified the resources and is working on the process. We just a few meetings away from securing a strategic and action plan. Then we will be ready to make our first move.

What I like the best from this meeting is that we also looking long term, past Covid 19 on how can we strengthen our Native Hawaiian Business community for the future.

Now that’s how you play Kōnane.
