Dear Dog Owners,
My heart goes out to you because we are living in a time where I see new trainers pop up literally every week. Itās really hard to sift through all of us to decide who youāll trust to help you and your dog. Here are the things I personally would consider
And to those in the industry - Please recognize that I am all for people joining the industry and have voiced my hope multiple times that dog trainers will see one another as community, not competition. We can help more dogs and owners together than separately.
That being said, Iāve been seeing a lot of dog trainers pop up thinking itās easy money and have no clue what theyāre doing - even harming dogs in the process. So I invite professionals to join us, but please do make sure you know what youāre doing before you take on dog clients and definitely before you start charging people.
All the great dog trainers I know started working dogs for free. Volunteering to work dogs. Shadowing trainers. Paying for mentorship. Focus on learning, first. Dog training, especially behavior modification of any type, is not something you can just walk into with no prior hands on experience. Read about it all you want. That doesnāt make you prepared for it. And being ill prepared will get you and the dog hurt, or worse. And owners are counting on you to help.
And because Iāve been getting this arSJCent a lot - NO, training your own dog - rescue, working k9 of any kind, wolf dog, or whatever - does not qualify you to be a dog trainer. Come back and chat when youāve successfully worked hundreds of dogs at minimum.
Thank you for the graphic
