Competing against over 400 schools across Texas, varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders JV placed seventh in state among the 6A Division 1 teams at the UIL State Spirit Competition in Fort Worth on Jan. 17th.

“The moment we stepped off of that mat, we were in tears because we all knew that we all did our jobs, and we all did awesome,” sophomore Lucia Legarth said. “It was a great feeling, and knowing that all the hard work finally paid off was the biggest relief.”

The UIL routine the team worked on developing was a typical game day, including props like signs and flags.

“Throughout the year, if something is not going right, our coach will change it and make sure we‘re performing to the best of our ability,” sophomore Peyton Gunn said. “If we look at other teams and we see they have something cool, we can always modify our routine, and we just try to be the loudest we can.”

The Seven Lakes Masterworks concert was held Jan. 31st for an audience of about 400 attendees. Held once every two years, the biannual Masterworks concert is a large-scale fine arts showcase that features the orchestra, band, and choir, along with special guest appearances. The 2026 season focused on the theme of “The Hope Within Us,” with repertoire ranging from Aaron Perrine’s Only Light to Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia.

“My favorite part was getting to collaborate with the band and orchestra,” viola member Gabriel Lan said. “It’s something that you don’t get to do very often,”

This years’ performance featured guest conductor Jeffrey Grogan, an internationally acclaimed musician and the current professor of Orchestral Studies at Baylor University’s School of Music. Having conducted in venues from the Musikverein in Vienna to the Sydney Opera House in Australia, Grogan brings extensive conducting experience to the Seven Lakes stage.

“He really fleshes out all these movements and it makes everything so much more dynamic and engaging,” varsity choir member Brian Barnes said. “It provides a new perspective.”

As music filled the studio, top dancers from across Texas rehearsed in perfect synchronization, each one representing the pinnacle of dance performance and leadership from their school. Among those 280 students selected statewide to attend the Texas Dance Educators Association (TDEA) convention included Seven Lakes senior Brooke Vorst, the current colonel of the Sapphires dance team. For Vorst, attending TDEA was an experience that allowed her to connect and collaborate with dancers from all backgrounds who shared the same passion for dance.

“It was really fun to meet new people and learn how other teams work and it was nice that everyone had a common goal of learning the routine,“ Vorst said.

Only a limited number of students are chosen each year to participate in the TDEA dance workshop, with most schools choosing their head officer to represent their program. According to Sapphire director Jennifer Willey, the conference is a “different experience” that combines challenge with creativity.

“It was just different being in an environment with all head officers who understand what a practice should look like,” Willey said. “Everybody was so locked in the whole time that it was like the perfect team.”

Thirty-nine Seven Lakes High School students out of 200 KatyISD student-athletes were named Academic All-State by the Texas High School Coaches Association earlier this year, recognizing achievement in both academics and athletics.

Students must be nominated by a coach and are evaluated based on Grade Point Average, moral character, and good standing with the team. Honorees are placed accordingly on the elite, 1st team, 2nd team, or honorable mention levels.

Students cited time management and support from their coaches were a key factor in maintaining good grades alongside demanding athletic schedules.

“I felt pretty grateful that the work that I put in balancing both athletics and coursework gets recognized since it can be pretty demanding at times,” senior Albert Acosta said. “Especially during tough practices or a hard school week, it felt nice that my efforts were acknowledged.”

Traveling through Guatemala, Canada, and across the United States, sophomore Jade Hu puts herself through countless trips for one passion: badminton. While other players might see it as an after-school hobby, Hu takes the sport into a higher level of commitment, competitiveness, and demand. Her six years of experience in badminton allow her to compete at both the national and international level.

“If you’re not confident, your shots are just gonna be bad because you already put in your mind that they’re not good enough.” Hu said, “Just be confident in yourself, [and] you can win.”

Playing badminton is both physically and emotionally demanding, especially when competing on an international level and facing the best players across North America.

“It’s more of a mental game: you have to stay confident [and] believe in yourself,” Hu said. “It’s not a team sport, so self talk is really important in singles and doubles.”

The Seven Lakes Boys Basketball team is on a historic run, winning 25 straight games as they head into district and regional competition. With 17 players and five coaches, the Spartans have remained unbeaten, securing wins over longtime rivals such as Cinco Ranch and Tompkins and positioning themselves as one of the top teams in Texas Class 6A this season.

“It’s just amazing to do something that’s never been done before at the school,” captain and junior Isaiah Santos said. “Obviously the job’s not finished, but right now it just feels amazing being [in] a place that no other Spartan basketball player has been in before.”

Players attribute much of their team’s success towards the coaching staff’s emphasis on trust and accountability.

“[Coach] Heston believes in us and he thinks that if we play our way, that we can beat anybody,” senior Hudson Smith said. “Just that trust in us is kind of how it all starts.”

Although the team did not train during the summer, head coach Shannon Heston said he provided players with individualized areas to focus on during the off-season.

“We start working on piecing everything together with the skills our team has and try to play to the strengths of our players,” Heston said. “If we are playing with great effort and making shots, we are very hard to beat!”

During high school, students make one of the biggest decisions of their life: they decide which career they intend to pursue. For most students this decision is difficult to make; however, for junior and president of the Law Club Flora Zhou, she has already taken measures to help students explore their passions in the field of law.
