Forgive Harrison head coach Mike Rusek Jr. for feeling exhausted after the first week of the state tournament. That’s because Friday night’s North 2, Group 2 quarterfinal against Mendham was the type of game a coach won’t forget. It took 80 minutes of regulation, a pair of scoreless overtime periods and then penalty kicks before the Blue Tide ensured their season would continue on as it outlasted Mendham squad in PKs by a 4-3 margin. Next up for Harrison on Tuesday afternoon is another daunting challenge in Voorhees, the reigning Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament champions, who earned an impressive 3-0 victory over Lyndhurst in the quarterfinals....

When Meya Ranges set her goals for Saturday’s NJSIAA Group 3 Championships at Holmdel Park, qualifying for the Meet of Champions was not one of them. “Meet of Champions was not on my mind at all,” said Ranges. “I knew I had a shot of getting a wild card spot, but since it was at Holmdel, I know nothing is guaranteed because Holmdel is such a difficult course. So honestly, going into groups, I had no real expectations other than beating my original time at Holmdel.” An afterthought a few days ago became reality as Ranges exceeded her high expectations by running a 19:50....

Moments after Harrison had lost in the Hudson County Tournament final, Mike Rusek walked onto the grass pitch at Sports Illustrated Stadium to talk to his players. And as Rusek individually met with one disappointed player after another, he repeated the same message as they walked off the field, that the focus was now on November and the state tournament. “I’m already saying it to kids while shaking their hands. We only got to be undefeated in November. That’s our slogan for the next month. Just undefeated in November,” Rusek said on Tuesday night following Harrison’s 2-0 loss to St....

The Observer — a local tradition since 1887 ...

THE OBSERVER NEWSPAPER has published every week, without interruption, since its inception as The Arlington Observer on May 14, 1887. What was once a single-sheet of news has flourished into a tabloid-format newspaper that covers 8 towns — Kearny, Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Nutley, Belleville and Bloomfield.

The newspaper offers many ways for businesses to showcase themselves, including in print, on the web, via social media and through video sponsorships. As the times have changed, so, too, has The Observer.

We were among the first newspapers in the country to offer a website back in the mid-1990s thanks to the constant-forward thinking of our late-owner Anthony Tortoreti. We were among the first weekly newspapers to offer podcasts and audio in 2007.

And we are among the few weekly newspapers offering live video news — and live video opportunities for advertisers.
