We're pleased to feature David Heyde's MKT Central Texas Subdivision in our July/August 2025 issue. The two-level HO-scale layout is compact but bold, and captures the zest of the iconic Katy during the 1980s in and around Waco, TX. Every bit of space from floor to ceiling is consumed and functional in what once was a one-car garage. Heyde encourages others who may be procrastinating on building a layout to get started, even if it’s small. “I’ve learned a lot. And it’s important that people who are on the fence about starting a layout jump in. Nothing is perfect. Get started. You can do a lot in a small space."

We did some switching this weekend on the Northwest Tarrant & Pacific and got a glimpse of one of HomeShops' latest releases. NT&P No. 1509, patched ex-Santa Fe GP38-2 No. 3563, pushes Wyoming Valley & Western boxcar No. 56033 into the siding at American Warehouse. The WVW Berwick 7580 60-foot hi-cube boxcar, manufactured by ExactRail, in one of four freelance roads in the run offered by Home Shops.

The new Hobby Industry Coalition, a new non-partisan hobby industry initiative calling for tariff relief on model trains and other hobbies, formally launched today:

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A new non-partisan hobby industry initiative launched today calls for targeted tariff relief to protect American small businesses, STEM education, and community-based creative industries.

The Hobby Industry Coalition ( www.HobbyCoalition.org ) represents a wide spectrum of the U.S. toy and hobby industry, including model railroading, tabletop gaming, educational kits, plastic and die cast models, radio control, puzzles, craft supplies, and STEM-related products. The industry supports over 600,000 U.S. jobs and includes thousands of small and family-run businesses.

“Trade Policy at a Crossroads: Safeguarding the Toy & Hobby Industry” outlines how current U.S. trade policy — specifically the imposition of a maximum of 145 percent tariffs on Chinese imports — is endangering the American toy and hobby industry. Tariffs imposed under Section 301, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), and fentanyl-related actions have unintentionally swept up low-risk, consumer-facing products that play no role in national security.

“The toy and hobby industry — a vital source of learning, creativity, and community — is facing collapse,” according to the paper. “Tariffs have escalated into an existential threat.”

The Coalition is not calling for repeal, but for refinement: reinstating past exclusion processes, creating a transparent review mechanism, and ensuring critical hobby and educational tools remain accessible,” spokesperson Stacey Walthers Naffah said.

“We’re offering a policy solution that respects enforcement goals while correcting unintended harm,” she said. “This is practical, precedent-based, and pro-small business. We support the ideas of a reinvigorated domestic manufacturing base and healthy, happy American communities, and we can help support that aim. We stand ready with a wide range of hobbies that support learning, workforce development, plus fulfillment and enjoyment for all. We ask for relief, as time is of the essence to preserve the industry as it is enjoyed today to build the future we want tomorrow.”

The Coalition website also features:
• A Take Action center for contacting elected officials
• A public Petition for Fair Trade
• A Daily Tariff Tracker
• A Storefront Toolkit for retailers
• Shareable visuals and media resources
• FAQ's

A rare snowstorm in North Texas today is cause for reflection, so we dug through the Cowcatcher archives and found this shot from Jim Aust's HO Great Northern Railway featured in one of our early editions. Great Northern No. 400 idles at Wellington after a fierce winter storm that dumped heavy snow at the station. The stunning scene, which was featured on the cover of the November/December 2006 Cowcatcher Round Up, greets visitors to the 1950s-60s steam-to-diesel transition layout. Tim Blackwell took the photo.

The January/February 2025 Cowcatcher is loaded with content to kick off the New Year! Among the highlights: Readers gave model railroading high marks and even spent slightly more on products last year than in 2023. This and more results from the Cowcatcher's 2025 State of Model Railroading survey. Also, learn what factors railroads take into consideration when consisting locomotives. And, the N-scale Whitehurst & Pine Ridge Railroad incorporates the little-used Joint Agency yard concept between railroads to move grain. Get your copy today! https://cowcatchermagazine.com/
