Be prepared for some heavy traffic along the Cowlitz River later this week; the smelt are going to be running.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has approved two smelt dip-netting opportunities this week. Dip-netting will be allowed on Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. The Department of Fish and Wildlife stated that below-average water temperatures are the reason for the delayed run this year.

Dip-netting is only allowed from the shore, not from a boat. The designated area extends from the Cowlitz River Bridge over Tennant Way upstream to the Al Helenberg Memorial Boat Ramp, which is about a quarter of a mile from the PH-10 Bridge in Castle Rock.

A current Washington fishing license is now required to dip for smelt. The daily limit for smelt is 10 pounds, which fills about a quarter of a 5-gallon bucket. Each person must have their own container to hold the fish, and it must be marked with their name.

One man died and five other people have been displaced after a two-alarm house fire yesterday morning to the west of the Three Rivers Mall in Kelso.

At 10:42 a.m., crews from Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue and other agencies responded to the 100 block of South 6th Avenue after a 911 caller reported that their neighbor's house was on fire. While crews were en route, dispatch was also informed that someone was trapped in the garage.

Upon arrival, it was reported that a single-story home and a detached garage were both well involved in flames. Firefighters searched the home and garage while also working to put out the blaze. The fire was extinguished by around 10:55 a.m.

The man was found dead in the garage. The Kelso Police Department and Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office are conducting the investigation into his death. As of now, he has not been publicly identified.

Fire investigators say they believe the fire was accidentally caused by a portable electric heater. The five other residents of the home, three adults and two children, are displaced and receiving temporary housing through the American Red Cross. Damages are estimated at $175,000.

Two people sustained burn injuries in a church fire on Longview’s New West Side yesterday.

At 11:49 a.m., crews from Longview Fire and Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue responded to a reported fire at the two-story Trinity Lutheran Church on Washington Way. Firefighters found a large electrical panel burning in the basement and two individuals who had sustained serious burns.

Due to the nature of the electrical fire, it could not be extinguished until the power was isolated. The fire was held "in check" with dry chemical extinguishers until that happened. The Cowlitz PUD rushed to the scene and was able to secure power, which allowed firefighters to extinguish the fire before it spread to the rest of the building.

Longview Fire Battalion Chief Matt Amos said, “This fire was a good reminder to have trained individuals working on and around electrical systems.”

The two people who were burned were members of the church. One was transported to St. John Medical Center for evaluation, and the other declined to be taken by ambulance despite the injuries they sustained.

Longview Police Street Crimes detectives were able to successfully arrest a Hoquiam fugitive with multiple felony warrants on Friday, but not before he allegedly attempted to flee.

Longview Police Captain Brandon McNew reports that the arrest occurred at the intersection of 15th Avenue and Hudson Street. Detectives had been conducting plainclothes surveillance and identified 23-year-old Treyton Reid-Hancock operating a vehicle with a known associate, 22-year-old Amellia McCauley of Longview, who also had active warrants.

Reid-Hancock had been wanted on a felony warrant for robbery and several other warrants outside of Cowlitz County. Officers proceeded with caution due to his history of resisting arrest and a recent firearms-related assault charge.

The stop was initiated after he exited the Safeway parking lot. Officers used their vehicles to pin the car. Officers then reported that he resisted arrest, causing them to deploy a taser on him.

During the incident, McCauley was also taken into custody. Both individuals were booked into Cowlitz County Jail on multiple charges.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Some good news for a local eatery that was devastated by a fire in downtown Longview back in January: the Country Folks Deli is scheduled to reopen in just under two weeks on March 17th. Initially, they planned to open on the 10th, but the owner, Paige Espinoza, said that there was still a lot of work to be done, so they pushed it back a week.

The fire occurred next door to the Country Folks Deli at the All In Saloon early on the morning of January 26th. The All In Saloon has not said when they plan on reopening, but it’s not anticipated to be anytime soon.

The other affected business, Kathie’s Clutters and Crafts, will not be reopening. The store's owner, Kathie Frost, posted on Facebook last month, “It comes with immense regret and sadness to announce the closing of Kathie’s Clutters and Crafts.”

Frost said that the store suffered severe smoke and structural damage that will take a long time to repair. She said that she is retiring.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
