The Slow and Steady Hiker

The Slow and Steady Hiker I am a middle-aged mom and college professor with a new love for hiking, especially to waterfalls. So I became the slow and steady hiker!

In 2020 I got divorced and started pursuing a long time interest of mine-visiting waterfalls. What I learned was that waterfall chasing involves a lot of research, planning, and a lot of hiking!

I visited Old Stone Fort Archeological State Park in Manchester, Tennessee. This park is home to a woodland era rock wall that surrounds what is believed to have been a Native American ceremonial gathering space. Later it was the site of Civil War era mills built along the waterfalls in the Duck River..the trails are easy and scenic. This is a quiet park to enjoy a place of natural beauty and historical significance.

With the hurricane coming we ended up cancelling our planned camping and caving trip to Mammoth Cave State Park. We were very lucky that, despite about 11 inches of rain we had little wind, saving us from downed trees and major flooding. The kids and I explored some of the post Hurricane water at High Shoal Falls in Dallas,GA and Sweetwater Creek State Park and Lake Acworth.

The second waterfall in the tour outside Seattle was Snoqualmie Falls. It did not require a hike, just a short walk to a lovely viewing area. The guide pointed out that the area near the falls was where they filmed the show Twin Peaks.

I signed up for a two waterfall tour through Viator yesterday morning outside of Seattle, where I'm attending a conference. The first stop was a 2.5 mile hike through the forest of Ollalie State Forest to see Twin fall and a bonus upper falls. The trail is moderate with about 600 feet elevation climb along the Snolquamie River. The trail is dotted with large hundred of years old Frasier firs, and I saw a Banana Slug! Totally worth scuffing up the only pair of shoes that I brought to give a professional presentation in lol
