Manhattan Project National Historical Park will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Japan with two events in Richland. On Friday, August 8, the REACH Museum will host the Messages of Peace program from 12 to 3:30 p.m. Ranger programs about the Manhattan Project and Hiroshima survivor Sadako Sasaki are scheduled at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The following day, Saturday, August 9, a free Lights for Peace event will take place at 8:00 p.m. at the Fingernail Stage in Howard Amon Park.

Residents of Walla Walla County on August 5 will decide Proposition 1, a measure proposing a sales tax increase to fund emergency communications. If approved, the measure would increase the sales and use tax by two-tenths of one percent to enhance the county's 911 dispatch center, WESCOM, by updating equipment, improving services and bolstering staffing.
