Saturday morning, a large MABAS Response Drill was held in the City of Milwaukee. The drill mobilized five Strike Teams of ambulances (five ambulances and two Chiefs) from five Southeastern Wisconsin Counties to the City of Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Fire Department, simulating a mass casualty incident, requested five Strike Teams. This is accomplished by a request from an Incident Commander to MFD Dispatch who then transfers it to Division 107 Communications (City of Wauwatosa) who then makes a formal request on a shared radio frequency. In less than an hour there were 25 ambulances and 10 Chiefs/Aids in the City ready to assist. The MABAS system is organized into Divisions, each Division is typically a County. Divisions that responded on the drill to Milwaukee were Divisions 101 (Kenosha), 102 (Racine), 103 (Walworth), 106 (Waukesha) and 119 (Ozaukee).
Though the drill was very successful, it gave organizers plenty to work on to improve large responses like this in the future.
Special thanks to the Milwaukee Fire Department Command Staff and MFD Radio Operations, Milwaukee Fire Bell Club Inc., MABAS Regional Coordinator and Division 107 President. Also, thanks to MFD photographer Nate Leff.
