Dominic Calvert-Lewin has dedicated Everton’s win over West Ham on Sunday to their late chairman Bill Kenwright.

Kenwright died last Tuesday aged 78, a few months after he was diagnosed with liver cancer.

The lifelong Evertonian became a board member at Goodison Park in 1989, later becoming chairman in 2004.

In their first game since his passing, the Toffees travelled to West Ham and claimed a deserved 1-0 win, courtesy of Calvert-Lewin’s strike early in the second-half.

‘No one was prepared for what happened this week and it’s saddened everybody at the club,’ the England striker told Sky Sports post-match.

‘That one was for Bill, he would have been proud watching us today, proud of the way we one more, to get the lead and then dig in. It was a very good day.’

As has been the case at all Premier League games this weekend, tributes were paid to Kenwright and Sir Bobby Charlton pre-match, following the death of the Manchester United and England legend last Saturday.

‘A very sad week for different reasons. Not easy to get a result of course but befitting to get the win today for the sad loss of the chairman and for his family.

‘We edged it. We weren’t magnificent but we edged it. What glued the performance together if the energy and the commitment to the cause.’

As it stands, the win has moved Everton up to 15th in the table, five points clear of the relegation zone, after 10 games, and are next in action on Wednesday night against Burnley in the Carabao Cup.

West Ham meanwhile stay ninth and host London rivals Arsenal in the cup on the same night.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville blasted Bruno Fernandes for his petulance during the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, and said he’s ‘not conning anybody’.

The midfielder replaced Harry Maguire as club captain earlier this summer, with Erik ten Hag keen to give the armband to a regular starter.

Fernandes was widely criticised for his actions with the armband last season, particularly during a 7-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield when he shoved the linesman.

The fiery playmaker allowed his will-to-win to get the better of him against City, once the visitors had gone 3-0 up at Old Trafford.

Fernandes went crashing into tackles once Phil Foden put in City’s third goal.

And Neville accused Fernandes of setting the wrong tone for the team, and said he wasn’t fooling supporters.

Having earlier predicted that Fernandes would begin to lose his rag, Neville commented on the midfielder clattering into John Stones.

‘There you go,’ said Neville.

‘The problem is he’s running round trying ‘to do’ people. He’s tried ‘to do’ John Stones and he’s ended up hurting himself.

‘Stones has seen him coming and said ‘have that’. He’s a massive talent Bruno Fernandes but he’s not conning anyone in what he’s been doing these last few minutes.’

In the dying minutes, Antony was yellow carded for kicking out at Doku.

But once again, Neville felt the blame was with Fernandes for setting the tone for the rest of the team.

‘United have lost their discipline and it starts with the captain,’ said Neville.

‘They think it cons everybody but half the crowd have left because they know what they are. Running around kicking some people when you’re 3-0 down is no good’.

‘There you go, there’s your couple of whinges that I promised you.’

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admits he has sympathy for Manchester United and Rasmus Hojlund following the award of a first half penalty to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side were given a penalty when Rasmus Hojlund was adjudged to have brought down Rodri inside the box.

While the referee did not give the decision, the VAR interevened to send him to the monitor and a spot kick was then given.

Replays showed Hojlund did indeed tug at Rodri’s shirt but the Spaniard threw himself to the ground in dramatic fashion.

Working on Sky Sports’ commentary team, former Premier League official Mike Dean said the decision was ‘100% correct.’

However, Carragher disagreed at half-time and said United were on the end of a ‘harsh’ decision.

‘I think it’s a little bit harsh,’ said Carragher.

‘I’m not saying it’s not a penalty but this happens in every game and you don’t see a penalty.’

Legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has given a damning verdict of Chelsea, saying the team looks ‘lost’ following their defeat to Brentford.

The Blues were beaten 2-0 by the Bees at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, courtesy of goals from Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo.

Yet again, Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominated possession but were unable to make it count, spurning numerous chances to score and leaving the pitch to a chorus of boos from supporters.

It is Chelsea’s fourth league defeat of the season, a result that has left the 11th in the Premier League table after 10 games, 14 points off leaders Tottenham.

Embarrassingly, Brentford have now won twice at the home of their west London rivals in 2023, one more than Pochettino and his predecessor Frank Lampard have managed.

Chelsea have spent a staggering amount on players since Todd Boehly’s takeover last year, but in spite of the additions of the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Raheem Sterling, they’ve only gone backwards.

Asked for his assessment of Arsenal’s close rivals, Wenger told beIN Sports: ‘From outside you question what’s wrong there.

After just 10 games, Mauricio Pochettino is under a lot of pressure (Photo: Getty)

‘Is it the players they paid a lot of money for, are they not good enough? Are they overrated? Is the confidence in the team so low that they cannot turn up and play some constructive game?

‘Overall, it looks one-paced without ideas They look lost. It’s a team who looks lost.

‘And you have to find solutions very quickly because after 10 games, you see a trend in the league and the trend what they do is just below mid-table.’

Though Pochettino was initially given the benefit of the doubt, the continued poor results are taking their toll, with the manager clashing with a fan during the Brentford match.

Chelsea will be looking to get things back on track when they host Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, followed by a tricky league clash at Spurs next Monday.

Alex Ferguson has recalled the first time he ever saw Bobby Charlton and how they developed a personal connection at Manchester United, after the man Ferguson describes as ‘without question the greatest English player of all time’ died last week.

The former Manchester United manager paid tribute to the Red Devils legend after the sad news of his death at 86 years old.

The Scot’s memories of the Englishman go all the way back to the ’50s, and has nothing but praise for him as a player and a man.

Ferguson said: ‘I first set eyes on Bobby Charlton when he made his debut for England against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just two months after surviving the Munich Air Disaster.

‘I was there as a Scotland fan, stood on the terraces by the corner flag, and I remember Tom Finney playing as an outside-left against Alex Parker, who was a very good full-back. On one occasion, Finney got the better of Parker, took the ball to the byline and cut it back across the box for Bobby, who hammered it into the roof of the net from 16 yards out.

‘In those days you didn’t have players jumping on top of each other when they scored, and Bobby just jogged back to the halfway line with a couple of slaps on the back from his team-mates.

‘But the Scottish keeper sprinted out of his goal 40 yards to congratulate him, not just because it was a great goal, but also because of what Bobby had been through. Everyone in the stadium that day could see there was a bit of magic about him, but also some steel.

Bobby Charlton made 758 appearances for Manchester United (Picture: Getty Images)

‘The personal connection between us began almost three decades later, when I was manager of Aberdeen, and Bobby was a director of Manchester United when they were looking for a new manager.

‘The directors came to meet me in Glasgow and asked what my vision was for the job. I said I would take the same approach I had at Aberdeen, by looking to build up the whole club, not just the team, and that I would do that by developing young players.

‘As I was explaining this, I saw Bobby nudge one of the other directors and he said, “that’s what we want”. He’d made his mind up. From that moment on he was a tower of strength for me.

‘It’s no surprise to me that we’ve seen tributes to Sir Bobby from everywhere in the world, on every TV channel and in every newspaper, because he was without question the greatest English player of all time.

‘People loved him because of all those thunderbolt goals but it was more than that. My dad used to say that humility in success is a sign of greatness, and that was Bobby. He never used to boast about his own achievements; it was always about the team and the club.’

November features prominently on Auguste Rodin’s timeline. Widely regarded as the founder of modern sculpture, he was born in Paris on November 12, 1840, and passed away aged 77 on November 17, 1917.

And November 4, 2023, will go down in racing history as the day Aidan O’Brien’s superstar racehorse, named after the French genius, chisels out a craftsman-like victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

The three-year-old c**t has been aimed all year at the race which has a $4million purse.

He won the Derby in June, storming to victory at Epsom after underwhelming in the 2000 Guineas and then claimed the Irish Derby at the Curragh.

A poor performance at Ascot when last of ten was swiftly put in the rearview mirror when Auguste Rodin won the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown at the beginning of September.

He has since been tested and will relish the return to one mile four furlongs in California.

The Leopardstown success was on a flat left-handed track which sets him up nicely for Santa Anita and O’Brien is both enthusiastic and bullish about Auguste Rodin’s chances.

He’s currently 3/1 with Ladbrokes, Coral, Betway and Sky Bet to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf and should not disappoint his backers with Ryan Moore on board.

O’Brien can also enjoy success in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mares Turf with Warm Heart, first past the post in five of her last six outings, at 3/1 with Paddy Power and Betfair while Charlie Appleby’s Master of the Seas can add another victory for the European raiders by winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile at 9/2 with Unibet.

Jena Antonucci’s Arcangelo can make it four straight wins by taking the Breeders’ Cup Classic at a widespread 3/1 and River Tiber is 6/1 with Unibet to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Meanwhile, there won’t be a dry eye in the house if Cody’s Wish, wins the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile for a second year.

The horse has a remarkable association with young Cody Dorman, who has undergone 50 operations as he struggles to combat a rare genetic disorder called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome.

The teenager is unable to walk or talk and uses subtle head movements to communicate through a tablet. Both the lad and the thoroughbred have an unbelievable connection when they meet.

• The Detroit Lions are 10/11 with SpreadEx to beat the Las Vegas Raiders by more than a touchdown in their Monday Night NFL match up in Motor City.

• Afghanistan are 6/4 with Ladbrokes and Coral to add Sri Lanka to their list of Cricket World Cup scalps after Monday’s meeting in Pune.

Diogo Jota paid tribute to Luis Diaz with his goal celebration at Anfield on Sunday, after the Colombian’s parents were kidnapped in their home country earlier this weekend.

Diaz missed Liverpool’s game with Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon after the news that his mother and father were taken hostage by ‘assailants on motorcycles’ on Saturday evening.

Diaz’s mother, Cilenis Marulanda, has been freed, but Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, confirmed late on Saturday that his father is yet to be saved.

In a brief statement, Petro said: ‘In operation padlock in Barrancas, Luis Diaz’s mother has been rescued. We are still searching for the father.’

Colombian police confirmed on Sunday that there is a reward of 200m pesos (£39,938) for information that helps the rescue of Diaz’s father.

Colombia’s Minister of the Interior, Luis Fernando Velasco, said on Sunday: ‘Yesterday afternoon we received a call, we contacted the police, and the police commander, General Salamanca, went to the area with a very good effect, which was the release of the mother.

‘The actions of the public force seek to block the way for these to prevent them from transferring Luis Díaz’s father to Venezuela, which is a first hypothesis, and I ask citizens to report if they know anything.’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said before the match against Nottingham Forest: ‘We had to obviously make a late change because of the private situation involving Luis Diaz.

‘It’s a worrying situation for all of us and it was a pretty tough night. I have never had that before. It’s a new experience I never needed.’

On Sunday morning the club released the following statement: ‘Liverpool Football Club can confirm it is aware of an ongoing situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia.

‘It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority.’

Erik ten Hag has defended his substitution of Rasmus Hojlund during Manchester United’s defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, a decision that was met with boos by the home fans at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were comfortably beaten 3-0 by their local rivals in a one-sided Premier League clash thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland and a third from Phil Foden.

Ten Hag is dealing with a lot of injuries, but his decisions during the match were in question as he rolled the dice on his substiutions.

Sofyan Amrabat was replaced by Mason Mount at half-time in an aggressive move from Ten Hag and it didn’t pay off as City dominated the second half.

However, it was the removal of Hojlund on 73 minutes, replaced by Alejandro Garnacho, which was poorly received by the Old Trafford faithful.

The Dutchman’s decision created boos from the stands, but he says it was necessary after a busy schedule for the Danish striker and a tough ask of him to press City hard all game.

‘Rasmus Hojlund is playing every game and he’s not used to it,’ Ten Hag told Sky Sports. ‘Against City four players have to work very hard to get the press on.

‘You have to protect those players as well, and for the team you have to protect them to get new energy on the pitch.’

On his substitutions, he added in speaking to the BBC: ‘You try to get more offensive and you see we worked very hard and brought in new energy, but it was impossible at that point, 3-0 down with five minutes left to play.’

Red Devils legend Roy Keane was not impressed with the half-time change, believing the removal of Amrabat left United exposed against the champions.

‘It wasn’t good from United, brilliant from City,’ the Irishman told Sky Sports. ‘There was no need for United to be that open at the start of the second half.’

Erik ten Hag hits back at Jamie Carragher after claims Manchester United are in ‘regression’ https://ift.tt/7QTXO6m

Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd have lost six of 13 games this season (Photo: Getty)

Erik ten Hag strongly disagrees with Jamie Carragher’s assessment that Manchester United have ‘regressed’ this season, saying ‘that is not the truth’.

United have endured a difficult start to the 2023/24 campaign, losing six of their 13 games across all competitions so far, results that have left them eighth in the Premier League.

Though they have won their last three matches in a row, performances are nowhere near the standard of last season, with the side looking worse despite heavy investment in the squad.

‘The football is stale and the symptoms of regression are visible; there is a lack of style and panache, few of Erik Ten Hag’s signings are consistently performing,’ Liverpool legend Carragher said ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

‘Yet again, the only means by which they can stop Manchester City this weekend is by playing ‘underdog football’ – sitting deep, counter-attacking and hoping defensive resilience yields a reward.’

He is far from the only one to have questioned the Dutch manager’s methods, but when asked about these comments, Ten Hag claimed the very opposite was happening, and that the Red Devils were making great progress on the pitch.

‘In possession we have to do better, but there are reasons that I don’t go into, but everyone is seeing,’ the 53-year-old said in his pre-match press conference.

Jamie Carragher says Man Utd’s style of play is ‘stale’ (Photo: Getty)

‘There are also facts that I disagree with, [in which] we are much better. We are in the top three in the Premier League for high-ball regains. We in the top [teams] in the Premier League for middle-ball regains.

‘So when we are pressing, we are very good. So that is not the truth what he is saying.

‘I said we are in the right direction, and we have a way to go. I see positives, I see also negatives, which is probably what Christian [Eriksen] is referring to. We are not consistently, in possession, on the level where we can be, where we show in games we can be.

‘Like for instance, Arsenal away. Also, the first 30 minutes in Bayern Munich away. But we should do this on a consistent basis. But pressing, we are quite good. We have the most ball regains from the whole Premier League, we have the most middle regains from the whole Premier League.

‘So, there you see, our defensive organisation, our pressing organisation. I said before the season how we wanted to play, that is us. But then, we don’t take the benefit in the attacking transition moments, and we should be because we have the abilities in our team, the players there who can take benefit from it.

‘We paid some attention to it, and this has to grow, this has to progress. Then games will become easier.’
