Rigetti is making advancements, but its quantum computing systems are error-prone, and the company is burning through cash.

IBM, meanwhile, is a quantum-first company supported by its legacy business.

This is allowing IBM to attack quantum computing with two very different chips.

10 stocks we like better than International Business Machines ›

Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI) was one of the hottest quantum computing stocks in 2025, as the company hit some important hardware milestones this year. This included demonstrating the industry's largest multichip quantum computer and introducing a 100+-qubit chiplet system with 99.5% fidelity (a measure of accuracy in quantum computing). Rigetti is looking to introduce a 150+-qubit system with 99.7% fidelity around the end of 2026 and a 1,000+-qubit system with 99.8% fidelity around the end of 2027.

The company also saw some commercial success. It received two orders totaling $5.7 million for its Novera quantum computing systems, which it will deliver in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, it was awarded a three-year $5.8 million contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop a superconducting quantum network in collaboration with Dutch quantum computing company QphoX. Rigetti also became one of the first companies to join the Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) NVQLink platform for integrating quantum computers and artificial intelligence supercomputers.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »

However, Rigetti did experience a setback when it was not one of the first 11 companies selected by the United States government's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to advance to the second phase of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative. The program was established to determine whether companies are on the right path to building a fault-tolerant quantum computer within the next decade.

Rigetti's one big advantage is that its superconducting qubits are fast, estimated to be 10,000 times faster than those used by IonQ. However, when it comes to quantum computing, 99.5% fidelity is considered extremely error-prone. In fact, data scientists don't recommend introducing other error-reducing techniques until hardware can reach 99.9% fidelity.

With minimal revenue and a technology that is considered error-prone, Rigetti is a highly speculative stock with a lot of risks. However, there is a less risky way to play the sector.

Forget about Rigetti.

While IBM (NYSE: IBM) is known as a legacy tech company, it has actually been transforming itself into a quantum-computing-first company. It also dumped its low-gross-margin information technology infrastructure service business, spinning it off into Kyndryl in 2021. Notably, it's also not dabbling in quantum computing as a side project like Alphabet or Microsoft.

IBM is actually attacking quantum computing on two different fronts. With its new 120-qubit Nighthawk chip, it is prioritizing quality over quantity. The company redesigned its chip layout to increase connections, which it expects will help achieve quantum advantage, the ability to solve actual problems better or more cheaply than today's supercomputers. The chip can handle problems that "require up to 5,000 two-qubit gates," which is an important milestone in quantum computing, as this is the level that pushes it above today's classical supercomputers. The company is looking to reach 10,000 gates (operations) by 2027. Nighthawk is the chip IBM is looking to use with IBM Cloud to run advanced simulations in the coming years.

At the same time, IBM has also introduced a more experimental chip called Loon to help it develop a fault-tolerant quantum computer that doesn't make mistakes. This chip is more specialized than Nighthawk and can reset qubits during a calculation without stopping. IBM is looking to Loom to be the backbone of the world's first large-scale, error-free quantum computer, Starling, in 2029.

IBM is also looking to take a page out of Nvidia's book with how Nvidia's CUDA software platform formed a moat around its graphics processing units. IBM has created the Qiskit software platform for quantum research. While it's open-source, unlike CUDA, which is proprietary, it has been optimized for IBM hardware.

IBM's core business is still growing solidly, while it's generating a ton of operating cash flow that it can plow back into its quantum computing research. That makes IBM a much better risk-reward play than Rigetti, which is burning through cash.

Imagine having a world where you no longer need to work to afford to live. While it may sound like a far-off dream, at least one tech expert predicts that could happen in the next two decades. Find out below what a “universal high income” is and how much you’d receive.

What Is ‘Universal High Income’?

Elon Musk recently said on an episode of the “People by WTF” podcast that in less than 20 years, the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics will make working optional.

Musk predicted there will be a “universal high income (UHI)” and humans won’t need to work and will have all they need. In other words, you would have abundant resources, not just basic needs.

Perhaps one frustrating part of Musk’s vision is that he didn’t provide much in the way of exact dollar amounts. Rather, he talked about UHI covering everything such as food, housing and medical care. According to him, goods would become very cheap and money would be essentially irrelevant.

While the term UHI may be new to you, perhaps the idea of “universal basic income” (UBI) is more familiar. The latter has focused on poverty alleviation.

How Much Money Could You See?

All of this discussion may be nice, but it doesn’t really give you an idea of how much you might get under UHI. After all, even the term “high income” means lots of different things to different people.

If you ask ChatGPT for an amount that equates to UHI, you’ll receive a variety of answers. One common amount is $175,700 a year. This number has been talked about quite a bit in discussions online and elsewhere regarding UHI. It also comes from an article by the Tax Project Institute.

ChatGPT shared other amounts as well. They included a round figure of $3,000 a month and some lower figures such $10,000 to $13,000 a year. The wide range of amounts opens up an interesting discussion point for financial advisors and their clients — the different ways to budget to ensure a successful future for their money.

One lucky person in Arkansas won the second-highest Powerball jackpot of all time, but it could take years for their identity to be released to the public.

On Christmas Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 24, after months of the Powerball jackpot continuing to grow, someone finally got lucky and won big. Talk about a great Christmas present!

The $1.817 billion jackpot was won by a single ticket. If the lucky winner chooses to collect the cash option, they will receive an estimated $834.9 million.

If the winner chooses to remain anonymous, the world won't know who won the grand prize − but only for a limited time.

Here's what to know.

Can Arkansas lottery winners remain anonymous?

Yes, according to Arkansas law. If a person wins over $500,000 through the lottery, they may request to remain anonymous. But, after three years, the name of the person who claimed the jackpot will become public information. The law was enacted in 2021.

This is the second time in the game's history that a jackpot was won by a ticket sold in Arkansas. The first time was in 2010.

More news: Powerball jackpot reaches $1.6 billion. See game's top 10 jackpots.

See other states that allow lottery winner anonymity

Over a dozen states let winners collect their prizes anonymously, and in some places, such as Arizona or Virginia, the condition depends entirely on the amount of money that is won.

Michigan, Ohio, the territory of Puerto Rico and other states have specific stipulations regarding anonymity.

Only 10 states, including Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Carolina, and Wyoming, grant true anonymity.

Arizona: prize must be over $100,000

Delaware: any prize

Georgia: prize must be over $250,000

Illinois: prize must be over $250,000

Kansas: any prize

Maryland: any prize

Minnesota: prize must be over $10,000

Mississippi: any prize

Missouri: any prize

Montana: any prize

New Jersey: any prize

North Dakota: any prize

Oregon: any prize

South Carolina: any prize

Texas: prize must be over $1 million

Virginia: prize must be greater than $10 million

West Virginia: prize must be over $1 million

Wyoming: any prize

Did anyone else win the Powerball jackpot?

Powerball tickets in New Jersey.

No other tickets won the Powerball jackpot, but according to Powerball, tickets sold in California, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and two tickets sold in New York, won the Match 5 $1 million prize.

Additionally, 114 tickets sold across the country won $50,000 prizes, while 31 won $100,000 prizes. In Colorado and South Carolina, two more tickets won a $500,000 prize in the Double Play drawing.

Powerball winning numbers for 12/24/2025

The winning numbers for the Wednesday, Dec. 24, drawing are: 4, 25, 31, 52, 59, and the Powerball is 19. The “Power Play” multiplier is 2x.

Winning lottery numbers are sponsored by Jackpocket, the official digital lottery courier of the USA TODAY Network.

2025 has been a big year for Powerball. In September, the jackpot reached $1.787 billion, the second-highest in the game's history. Two people, one in Fredericksburg, Texas, and one in St. Louis, Missouri, won the jackpot.

When is the next Powerball drawing?

The next drawing will take place on Saturday, Dec. 27, at 10:59 p.m. ET.

Because someone won the grand prize, the jackpot will reset to an estimated $20 million with a cash value of $9.2 million.

How to play Powerball

To play Powerball, you have to buy a ticket for $2. You can do this at a variety of locations, including your local convenience store, gas station, or even grocery store. In some states, Powerball tickets can be bought online.

A person holds tickets for the $1.25 billion jackpot in the Powerball lottery drawing in New York City on Dec. 17, 2025.

Once you have your ticket, you need to pick six numbers. Five of them will be white balls with numbers from 1 to 69. The red Powerball ranges from 1 to 26. People can also add a “Power Play” for $1, which increases the winning for all non-jackpot prizes.

The “Power Play” multiplier can multiply winnings by: 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X.

If you are feeling unlucky or want the computer to do the work for you, the “Quick Pick” option is available, where computer-generated numbers will be printed on a Powerball ticket. To win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball.

Powerball drawings are held on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights. If no one wins the jackpot, the cash prize will keep ticking up.

Where to buy lottery tickets

Tickets can be purchased in person at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets.

You can also order tickets online through Jackpocket, the official digital lottery courier of the USA TODAY Network, in these U.S. states and territories: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C. and West Virginia. The Jackpocket app allows you to pick your lottery game and numbers, place your order, see your ticket and collect your winnings all using your phone or home computer.

Jennifer Lopez's at-home Christmas celebration was one to dress up for.

After showing fans how she celebrated Christmas Eve in cozy pink pajamas, the "Let's Get Loud" singer, 56, revealed the '90s-coded and sexy look she slipped into for her family's festive dinner.

On Thursday, Dec. 25, the Kiss of the Spider Woman actress shared an Instagram video of herself posing in a body-hugging red dress with spaghetti straps and a cleavage-baring neckline. She paired the look with a bow-adorned updo, statement earrings and a n**e lip.

The clip also showed Lopez's massive Christmas tree, her fireplace decked out in garland and her decorative tablescape with red floral arrangements, taper candles and dinnerware topped with pink ribbons.

"Merry Christmas one and all," she wrote.

Lopez's gathering comes after she made headlines for wearing a head-turning look at a lavish wedding in India for U.S.-based pharmaceutical heiress Netra Mantena and New York tech entrepreneur Vamsi Gadiraju. Her ensemble featured the Maharani necklace of 168 carats of emeralds from Manish Malhotra High Jewelry that dripped down her décolletage. It took 1,800 hours to craft.

The holidays also mark a short break for Lopez as she prepares for her upcoming Las Vegas residency.

In a video that premiered exclusively with PEOPLE earlier this month, Lopez offered a look at the grind that goes into perfecting her performance.

The clip shows the musician jokingly striking some fierce poses while at rehearsals and watching her dancers practice choreography for her fan-favorite 2007 song “Do It Well." The hit is set to be featured on Lopez's setlist for the first time in years.

“She’s f------ unbelievable,” a crew member tells the camera. “Who learns that in one day? You’re so good!”

“Go back a little bit, and let’s do it a little bit more elegantly,” she advises.

The video then features a montage of Lopez rehearsing her moves as “Do It Well” plays. The montage features a sneak peek at what’s to come, including elaborate set pieces, extravagant dances and more.

Jennifer Lopez: Up All Night Live in Las Vegas is set to open at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace during the week of New Year’s Eve, with four performances on Dec. 30 and 31 and Jan. 2 and 3. She’ll also perform eight shows in March.

According to a press release, Lopez will sing “chart-topping hits from across her legendary career, alongside exclusive new ‘never heard before’ songs.”

Lopez announced her new residency in May, shortly after hosting the 2025 American Music Awards (and pulling off an impressive eight outfit changes during the show).

“Just everything in my life right now just feels really healthy and good, and I’m ready to get out there and make people sing and dance and have a good time,” she told PEOPLE in May. "That’s always my goal.”
