As the holiday shopping season gets underway, the Kent Police Department is reminding residents to stay alert and take precautions to protect themselves and their valuables when buying gifts online or in person.

The department issued a list of safety reminders this week aimed at helping shoppers avoid theft and scams during one of the busiest retail periods of the year:

- For online shoppers, Kent Police advise using secure websites that include “https” in the web address and researching unfamiliar sellers before making purchases. They recommend using credit cards over debit cards because of stronger fraud protections and monitoring statements regularly for suspicious charges. Shoppers are also encouraged to track deliveries, install doorbell cameras, and arrange to be home or have a neighbor retrieve packages to prevent porch thefts.

- When shopping in person, residents should keep valuables out of sight by placing purchases in the trunk before arriving at a parking lot.

An early-morning fire severely damaged a home on the east hill of Kent on Thursday, Nov. 6, but all residents and their three dogs escaped safely, according to Puget Sound Fire.

Fire crews from Puget Sound Fire and the Renton Regional Fire Authority were dispatched around 4:55 a.m. after multiple neighbors called 911 to report flames coming from a garage.

When firefighters arrived, most of the small two-story house was already engulfed in flames.

The residents told firefighters they smelled smoke before their alarms sounded. When they exited through the front door, they saw fire coming out around the garage door.

Crews worked for more than 45 minutes to bring the main fire under control and spent several additional hours checking for and putting out hotspots.

No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents with emergency support.

The Path to Homeownership Starts in Burien

Affordable homeownership is possible, right here in Burien.

Habitat for Humanity Seattle–King & Kittitas Counties (Habitat SKKC) currently has 3-bedroom homes for sale starting at the low $400Ks. When finished in spring 2026, the 40 homes in the Miller’s Creek community will offer first-time buyers the long-term financial stability, independence, and equity-building that homeownership provides.

The estimated all-inclusive monthly payments for 3-bedroom, 1.5-2.5-bathroom units range from $2,800–$3,450. Mortgages will be capped at no more than 35% of household income to support affordability.

Habitat SKKC utilizes a land trust model to ensure the permanent affordability of our homes for future generations. In an area with an average home price of $631K and rising, these homes will guarantee that individuals and families continue to have a place to build their lives in Burien.

The Kent City Council and Committee of the Whole convened on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, addressing key financial matters, approving a property tax levy increase, and advancing multiple infrastructure projects.

Highlights of the meeting included a positive financial report anticipating a revenue surplus, and the unanimous approval of a 1% property tax increase.

In addition, improvements to the Earthworks Park bus stop and the bid award for resurfacing South 212th Street were both approved.

Financial Report

During the Committee of the Whole, the council heard the monthly financial report. Staff anticipate that 2025 revenue will be $4,000,000 over budget. Revenue from school zone cameras continues to decline, however, while red light camera revenue has been increasing. In addition, expenditures are looking like they’ll be under budget, except for the police services.

Property Tax Levy

A 1% property tax increase was unanimously approved.

A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a 58-year-old Renton man found with a sawed-off shotgun in his vehicle late Sunday night, Nov. 2, according to the Kent Police Department.

Around 9 p.m. on Nov. 2, Kent Police Officer Hernandez stopped a Honda Odyssey that ran a red light at SW 192nd Street and 140th Ave SE. Police said the driver was acting erratically and moving his hands rapidly inside the vehicle. He told the officer he was experiencing a medical problem and had been speeding as a result.

A female passenger in the vehicle was unresponsive and could not be awakened, prompting officers to call Puget Sound Fire for medical aid. As the driver exited the vehicle, officers spotted a Wi******er 12-gauge shotgun with a sawed-off barrel next to the driver’s seat.

Police said the driver claimed the gun was not his and that he had picked it up the previous day after finding it in a parking lot. Officers later confirmed he was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing fi****ms.
