Reality is setting in with local fiber artists about the loss of selection and access to yarns and other sewing supplies following the closure of JoAnn fabrics. But, for many years, privately-owned, local yarn stores have been open right alongside them, selling yarn and fabric, education and instruction, and expertise to enrich the knitting, crochet, and sewing experience of these customers.

Puget Sound and the Northwest is truly blessed to have so many, and so many different local yarns stores for its fiber enthusiasts. People really do plan their vacations around visiting them, seniors plan where they’re going to retire based on how many are how close to their residence or care facility. In perspective it’s another jewel in the crown of what makes this a wonderful place to live. Yarn stores are truly among the secret treasures to be discovered by those who venture into them.

One such business has been open since May 2008, All Points Yarn in Des Moines, WA (map below).

Meet (and adopt) Joel, RASKC’s Pet of the Week:

Joel is a 4-year-old male Alaskan Husky who can’t wait to find his forever home. He is a spirited dog with a fun-loving personality.

Joel is very smart and knows how to sit, shake, and lay down. He is a Husky, which means he’s full of energy and loves to play. He will do best with lots of exercise and something to keep his mind busy. He’s still working on his manners so would do best with a family who is willing to work with him to be the best dog he can be. His caregivers have mentioned that he does appear to be potty-trained.

Joel is 68 pounds and a bit overweight, so could benefit from some weight loss. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, and microchipped! His adoption comes with many benefits in addition to the love and snuggles he will give, including 30 days of opt-in health insurance through Trupanion and a discount on training through GoodPup.

As Pet of the Week, Joel’s adoption fee has been reduced.

From our sister site The Waterland Blog:

The City of Des Moines on Thursday, July 31, 2025 released its final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed demolition of the historic Masonic Home (aka "Landmark on the Sound"), bringing the controversial project one step closer to resolution.

The 90-page EIS, ordered more than three years ago in response to property owner Zenith's demolition application, is now posted on the city’s website.

Zenith Properties LLC, which purchased the 99-year old property for $11.5 million in 2019, is seeking to demolish all existing structures, citing safety concerns and ongoing issues with trespassing, vandalism, and graffiti.

There are no publicly released redevelopment plans from Zenith for the property beyond the demolition permit application, so its future use remains unknown.

A parking lot dispute outside the Inn Between Pub on the city's East Hill ended in gunfire early Thursday, July 31, 2025, leaving an 18-year-old with a gunshot wound to the leg and two men under arrest, Kent Police said.

Officers responded to 911 calls at 2:14 a.m. reporting shots fired at the bar, located at 25412 104th Ave. SE (map below).

Witnesses told police that the male suspect was trying to leave in a black SUV.

"Multiple officers arrived quickly, intercepted the SUV in the parking lot, and placed the driver into custody," Kent Police said in a statement.

Police said the 63-year-old suspect from Federal Way initially refused to comply, was believed to be armed, and at one point placed a handgun on the roof of his vehicle. He was arrested for obstruction.

Minutes later, dispatchers advised that a man with a gunshot wound to his leg had been dropped off at Valley Medical Center.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Exploring how people are building connections in today’s world, Mellow DeTray’s monthly column “In Search of Community” delves into the diverse ways individuals are finding a sense of belonging – not only in churches and religious gatherings, but also through secular groups.

Online interaction through social media can only go so deep, and I think more and more people are finding that it does not fulfill our real need for human connection. I’ve begun a project to explore the ways people are finding community in real life, with monthly visits to different community groups. To this end, this summer I attended Sunday service at Highline Christian Church. By a long shot, this seemed to be the most popular of the churches I’ve attended as part of this project.

I am not sure of the number of people in attendance, but the large church was nearly full.

Local business and nonprofit leaders got a crash course in how artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the way organizations pursue funding during the Kent Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon on July 24, 2025.

The event (see video highlights below), titled The AI Advantage in Grants and RFPs, featured Favour Orji, managing principal of ADA Unlimited, and DeiMarion Scisney, founder of The Data Guys™, who demonstrated how AI tools such as ChatGPT can streamline proposal writing and help lean teams compete for funding.

Orji opened the session by highlighting the challenge small teams face in navigating complex funding applications.

"Eighty percent of lean teams feel overwhelmed by proposal writing," Orji told attendees.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating 35-year-old Ashley Watson, a vulnerable adult who has been missing from her Kent home since the night of July 22, 2025.

Watson was last seen around 9 p.m. leaving her residence near the 11000 block of SE 252nd Place (map below).

According to Kent Police, she does not drive and rarely takes public transit alone, typically walking to familiar spots along 104th Ave SE between SE 240th and SE 256th Streets.

The Washington State Patrol issued an Endangered Missing Person Advisory on behalf of Kent Police, noting that Watson has mental disabilities and is cognitively closer to an 8-year-old child.

She is also reportedly off her prescribed medications and may be experiencing behavioral challenges.

“Ashley is vulnerable. Do not share possible sightings on social media or in our comments. Call 911,” authorities advised in a public alert.

A Kent Police officer conducting a routine patrol helped arrest a woman with multiple felony warrants and recover a stolen vehicle last week in the Panther Lake area.

Officer Thompson spotted a 2011 Kia Optima parked in a marked handicapped stall without a placard or license plate. When the vehicle began to leave the lot, he ran the plates and found they had been expired since 2023.

After pulling the car over, Officer Thompson contacted the 20-year-old driver, a Kent resident, who had a 10-year-old sibling in the passenger seat. A records check revealed the woman had several active Pierce County warrants, including charges for assault, resisting arrest, theft, and a no-bail felony warrant for reckless endangerment.

She was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. At her request, her mother arrived shortly afterward to take custody of the child and the vehicle.

But the vehicle quickly raised additional concerns.

DAWN Rising – a Kent-based nonprofit dedicated to assisting survivors of domestic violence – recently received a donation of new laptops from Comcast.

The contribution is helping DAWN Rising to remove obstacles to safety, opportunity, and independence by providing survivors with the technology they need to rebuild their lives.

“Comcast’s support has been truly life-changing for the survivors we serve and a powerful boost for the advocates who walk alongside them each day," said Gina Finley, Executive Director, DAWN Rising. "In our line of work, resources are often limited, and the needs are great. Advocates are passionate and dedicated, but without the right tools, helping survivors overcome barriers can feel discouraging and overwhelming. Their donation has been a practical, meaningful answer to that challenge.
