A 42-year-old Auburn man died after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening, Dec. 23, while crossing East Valley Highway in Kent, according to the Kent Police Department.

Police said officers and firefighters were dispatched at 5:24 p.m. Dec. 23 to the 18200 block of East Valley Highway (map below) after multiple 911 callers reported a pedestrian had been hit and was unconscious.

First responders provided medical aid, including CPR, before the man was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where sadly, he later died.

Witnesses told investigators the man was crossing East Valley Highway from east to west with another pedestrian when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. Police said he was not in a crosswalk at the time of the collision. The second pedestrian was not injured.

The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old Auburn man, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. The vehicle involved was a Volkswagen sedan, police said.

Santa Claus is not expected to be grounded by an incoming Christmas Eve windstorm, but residents across south King County could see downed trees, power outages and hazardous travel as strong winds move in on Wednesday, Dec. 24.

The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning and Coastal Flood Advisory for the region, warning of damaging winds, power outages and minor coastal flooding on Christmas Eve day.

The high wind warning remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday for much of western Washington, including south King County.

Forecasters said south winds of 20 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph.

The National Weather Service said the strongest winds are expected midday after an abrupt shift from east and northeast winds to southerly winds. Saturated soils from recent rainfall are expected to increase the risk of trees being blown down or uprooted, which could lead to widespread power outages and blocked roadways.

Several roads in Kent have reopened as river levels continue to recede and flood conditions improve, according to an update issued Sunday morning, Dec. 21, 2025 by the City of Kent.

City officials said conditions are trending in the right direction after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers further reduced outflows from the Howard Hanson Dam. The reduced releases are helping lower river levels and decreasing the risk of additional flooding.

Kent officials said they are aware of flood alerts in neighboring jurisdictions along the White River. While those areas are outside Kent city limits, city teams remain in close coordination with regional partners and continue to actively monitor local conditions.

Washington Attorney General Nick Brown told South Sound business leaders on Tuesday, Dec. 16 that his office is pressing ahead on consumer protection and public safety work while accelerating legal challenges to actions by the Trump administration that he said are harming Washington.

Brown was the keynote speaker at the South Sound Chambers of Commerce Legislative Coalition (SSCCLC) Breakfast held at Emerald Downs in Auburn Tuesday morning, where organizers and lawmakers repeatedly referenced recent catastrophic flooding and the strain it has placed on families, employers and local governments across south King County.

The coalition represents more than 3,200 businesses in the South Sound region that employ more than 185,000 people and generate more than $100 billion in economic activity.

In his remarks, Brown described the Attorney General’s Office as the second largest law firm on the West Coast, with 830 lawyers and more than 900 staff in 13 offices statewide.

Auburn Police are warning area residents about fraudulent locksmith stickers being placed on doors in the city’s north end, a scam that has been reported in other parts of the country.

Police said scammers allegedly remove legitimate locksmith stickers and contact information and replace them with fake ones.

When residents call the phone number on the fraudulent sticker, the individuals who answer may pose as legitimate locksmiths and offer service.

Police said the scam could allow suspects to make copies of keys under the guise of providing locksmith assistance, with the keys later used to commit burglaries.

The “silver foil” style sticker is the signature of an international locksmith syndicate that are designed to look like “official” property or maintenance tags to trick people into thinking they are calling a pre-approved service.
