A South King Fire & Rescue engine was struck at high speed Sunday morning, Sept. 21, 2025 while firefighters were responding to a rollover crash on I-5, injuring a firefighter and two drivers, the agency said.

The incident began at about 6:43 a.m. Sunday when crews were dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover in the southbound lanes of I-5 near the 37500 block, according to South King Fire.

A patient who had been ejected from the vehicle reported head and neck pain.

Officials said that Engine 361 was positioned north of the crash to provide blocking for responders, with Engine 364 extending the safety zone. At 6:58 a.m., another vehicle struck Engine 361 at a high rate of speed. The engineer inside was injured but had been wearing a seatbelt, South King Fire said. He was evaluated and transported by King County Medic One for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Federal Reserve (the Fed) meets this week, and expectations are high that they’ll cut the Federal Funds Rate. But does that mean mortgage rates will drop? Let’s clear up the confusion.

The Fed Doesn’t Directly Set Mortgage Rates

Right now, all eyes are on the Fed. Most economists expect they’ll cut the Federal Funds Rate at their mid-September meeting to try to head off a potential recession.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, markets are already betting on it. There’s virtually a 100% chance of a September cut. And based on what we know now, there’s about a 92% chance it’ll be a small cut (25 basis points) and an 8% chance it will be a bigger cut (50 basis points):

So, what exactly is the Federal Funds Rate? It’s the short-term interest rate banks charge each other. It impacts borrowing costs across the economy, but it’s not the same thing as mortgage rates. Still, the Fed’s actions can shape the direction mortgage rates take next.

Kent City Council approved a new sales tax and accepted several grants at their meeting on September 16, 2025. The new sales tax, a 0.01% increase, was unanimously approved to help fund public safety.

The council also accepted several grants, including ones to fund a DUI officer and a road preservation project.

During public comments, a speaker reminded the council about the upcoming Week Without Driving challenge.

New Sales Tax Approved

In accordance with House Bill 2015, cities that are qualified and eligible can now increase sales tax by .01%, with the proceeds to fund public safety. Though they expressed reservations about an increase in tax, the council unanimously approved this ordinance. It was explained that ever since the state changed the funding structure in 2008, the lack of retail business in Kent has severely hurt the city’s funding.

Meet (and adopt) Capone, RASKC’s Pet of the Week:

Capone is a 2-year-old male Pit Bull looking for a forever home. He is an affectionate lovebug who would be thrilled to cuddle up with you at home.

Capone is a very smart dog – at the shelter, he is practicing sit, down, up, and shake. He is full of energy and loves to play. He tends to calm down more when the people around him stay calm. Capone would do best when he has lots of exercise and something to keep his mind busy.

Capone is neutered, current on vaccinations, and microchipped. His adoption comes with many benefits in addition to the love and snuggles he will give, including 30 days of opt-in health insurance through Trupanion, a discount on online training from GoodPup and a $40 credit from training through Rover.

As Pet of the Week, Capone’s adoption fee has been reduced!

Kent Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing vulnerable adult who has not been seen in more than two weeks.

Detectives say 35-year-old Brandon Ensminger of West Hill Kent was released from a medical facility in mid-August and last seen at a 7-Eleven in Kent on Aug. 17.

Investigators later determined that his last known location was the Comfort Inn motel in Kent, where he checked out on Aug. 22.

Ensminger is described as an extreme introvert with multiple medical issues, including an auditory processing disorder.

Police said he is believed to be off his medication and in that state cannot care for himself.

"When unmedicated, Brandon may refuse to eat," Kent Police said in their statement. "When last seen, he had lost 30 pounds."

Although he drives, police said Ensminger does not currently have a vehicle and is likely on foot. He may be carrying a blue Walmart bag. He is known to frequent Central Avenue North and Pacific Highway South, often near motels.
