The King County Council this week passed a sweeping “Welcoming King County” motion aimed at strengthening legal, social, and structural protections for immigrants and refugees, sending a pointed message of resistance to recent federal immigration enforcement crackdowns.

Co-sponsored by Councilmembers Teresa Mosqueda, Jorge L. Barón, and Rod Dembowski, the motion commits King County to limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, enhancing deportation defense, and increasing staffing and public education targeted at immigrant and refugee communities — many of whom reside in South King County cities such as Burien, SeaTac, Kent, Tukwila, and Des Moines.

"As the federal administration continues to expand its campaign of fear and violence upon immigrant communities, we must stand with residents of King County by protecting data the county holds and the people within our borders," said Councilmember Mosqueda.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two victims killed in a fatal apartment shooting on July 14, 2025 as Gary Lee Winston, 34, and Migna Elizabeth Kennebrew, 46 — both residents of Kent.

Winston died from multiple gunshot wounds, and Kennebrew from a gunshot wound to the neck, according to official records.

As we previously reported, Kent Police were dispatched at approximately 8:37 p.m. to reports of an argument and gunfire at a residential complex in the 22400 block of Benson Road SE. Witnesses found a man outside and a woman inside; sadly, both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Kent Police detectives plan to submit the homicide case to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

A 51-year-old Kent man suspected in a tragic, fatal double shooting earlier this week was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon with the assistance of the Snohomish County U.S. Marshals Task Force, according to the Kent Police Department.

The arrest occurred around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Seattle area.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was booked into the King County Jail on unrelated charges while Kent Police detectives prepare to file the homicide case with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Rep. Edwin Obras.

Area voters got a jolt in their mailboxes this week — a campaign flyer from Rep. Edwin Obras (D-33rd District) accusing Burien Mayor Kevin Schilling of being “the worst mayor in the state on police staffing,” marking one of the most pointed disputes yet in the hotly contested 33rd District race.

Schilling – who has served as Burien Mayor since 2024 – is running against Rep. Edwin Obras and Darryl Jones for the 33rd Legislative District seat, which includes parts of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Kent, and Tukwila. Obras, a political newcomer, was appointed earlier this year after Rep. Tina Orwall resigned to replace retiring Sen. Karen Keiser in the state Senate.

Now, just months into his tenure, Obras faces his first election as Schilling and Jones seek to unseat him in what is shaping up to be one of South King County’s most closely watched legislative races.

Meet (and adopt) Ramsey, RASKC’s Pet of the Week:

Ramsey is a 6-year-old male Pit Bull who is looking for a forever home!

Ramsey was brought in by an Animal Control Officer at the beginning of June and it appeared that he had been on his own for a while. Ramsey is 48 pounds and is quite underweight. When he is at a healthy weight he will be considered a large breed dog!

Ramsey is very treat-motivated and will sit for them. He’s still learning how to be gentle when taking treats, so watch your fingers! Ramsey walks well on a leash and appears to be potty-trained.

Because of his shy nature, Ramsey would do best in a calm, quiet home without young children (fast movements and loud noises startle him). He’s still working on his manners so would do best with a family who is willing to work with him to be the best dog he can be!

Transportation Improvement Board Grant Projects

City Transportation Planner David Payne presented three projects that will be submitted to the 2025 Transportation Improvement Board (TIB). Each of the three will be considered for grant funding. The first project is a roundabout installation at SE 248th Street and 116th Ave SE.

After four years of digging, building, and shifting lanes, the brand-new Veterans Drive tunnel in Kent will make its debut this Wednesday, July 16, 2025, giving drivers another option to drive through the busy I–5 and SR 516 interchange.

The tunnel – which opens at 5 a.m. this Wednesday – runs beneath I-5 just north of the SR 516 underpass, linking Veterans Drive to the southbound I-5 off-ramp and the northbound I-5 on-ramp.

It also links to Veterans Drive, which was extended across Military Road South.

This new tunnel creates a convenient alternative to Kent-Des Moines Road/SR 516 by allowing people to travel between the Kent Valley and I-5 with fewer turns.

The Veterans Drive tunnel is part of the SR 509 Completion Project.

Construction on the Veterans Drive tunnel kicked off in 2021, with crews excavating more than 100,000 cubic yards of soil to make room for the tunnel which has two lanes in each direction and is 187 feet long and 23.5 feet tall.

After four years of digging, building, and shifting lanes, the brand-new Veterans Drive tunnel in Kent will make its debut this Wednesday, July 16, 2025, giving
