The Kent State soccer team utilized a strong defensive effort to shut out and defeat Ball State 1-0 Sunday to mark the team’s first Mid-American Conference victory.

This was KSU’s first win after four games of losses or ties. The win moves the Flashes to 3-3-3 (1-1) on the season. It positions the team in a seventh-place tie in the MAC. The Cardinals fell to 4-3-2 (1-1-1) on the season.

“We just gave them different ideas to create offensively,” coach Rob Marinaro said. “We sped up the possession and kept them unbalanced.”

More than 250 people filled the Hudson Green for a community rally organized by Jewish and Christian congregations, rejecting antisemitism and pledging solidarity, days after a confrontation by N**i protestors.

Rabbi Michael Ross of Temple Beth Shalom in Hudson, who helped organize the interfaith vigil, said the rapid response was crucial.

“After the first round of neo-N**i protests, we wanted to respond to this hate with a show of love and compassion,” Ross said. “We organized on Facebook within a couple days as well, and we had well over 250 people there.”

On the quiet Saturday morning of Sept. 20, community members gathered at the Kent United Church of Christ for the “Celebrate Recovery! Walk & Poetry Reading,” now in its second year, honoring the strength found in healing through walking, connection and poetry.

Hosted by the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County, the event offered a mix of resources, creativity and community connection for those impacted by mental health and addiction recovery.

“This is about perseverance and support,” said Gina Dufour, project coordinator for the Mental Health & Recovery Board and lead organizer of the event. “You can go through recovery alone if you have the willpower, but it’s so much more meaningful when people support you in that journey.”

After setting itself back with a team score of 11-over-par (299) in the first round, the Kent State men’s golf team had the third-best combined score in the second and third rounds to finish tied for sixth in a pool of 11 teams at the Canadian Collegiate with a score of even-par (864).

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed with how we played, but there were a lot of good things that we can pull from it,” Men’s Golf Coach Jon Mills said. “With it being a young team, each week you’re going to learn more and more.”

The Flashes had different contributors each round, but the team’s steady hand was sophomore Isaiah Ibit, who finished the tournament in third on the individual leaderboard with a score of 12-under-par (204) in his home country.
