The Metro SWAT team will conduct hostage situation training in the former Business Administration Building on Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kent State Sergeant Vance Voyles said the training is pre-scheduled to ensure the 50 participating police officers, composed of Summit and Portage counties, have the opportunity to re-familiarize themselves with the tools needed for certain situations, like hostage ones.

“A lot of places don’t get to train regularly because they’re going [from] call, to call, to call,” he said. “[We] have the opportunity to schedule something ahead of time and get everybody together and work on team dynamics, which is what the SWAT guys are doing.”

Kent State’s black squirrels are more than an unofficial campus mascot; they’re a beloved symbol of the university and the inspiration behind an official apparel line, Squirrel World.

Launched by University Communications and Marketing Assistant Vice President Bob Louis and Senior Business Manager Sheri Meacham, the brand began as an experimental “rogue” apparel line featuring squirrel-inspired designs.

“This was to play off the undeniable attraction to the black squirrel population that exists at Kent State,” Louis said. “We wanted to create a sense of being unconventional and edgy that would be imparted to the apparel.”

With the Gothic Horror subgenre slowly making its comeback last year with “Nosferatu,” this year we have Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein.” Unlike the past Frankenstein films, this movie is a book adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” novel, presenting a more accurate portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster and his creator, Victor Frankenstein.

But the question is, how different is this film compared to past Frankenstein films?

The story begins with Victor Frankenstein, played by Oscar Isaac, being chased down by “The Creature,” played by Jacob Elordi, in the Arctic. Soon after, a group of sailors finds and helps Victor as he tells his tale of how he created the creature. However, his tale is interrupted by the creature, who also tells his side of the story, revealing who the real monster of the tale actually is.

The Kent State men’s basketball team picked up a pair of highly-touted prospects on National Signing Day. Guards Jakhi Calloway and Dhani Miller, both coming from solid high school programs, will join the Flashes next season.

Calloway, coming out of Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus, was the second-highest rated point guard in the state of Ohio according to Neo Spotlight. During his time as a high school athlete, Calloway has racked up quite the awards list, being named to the All-Ohio Third Team and All-District and All-Conference First Teams as a member of the Hawks.

“Jakhi Calloway is a true point guard,” coach Rob Senderoff said. “We’ve watched him play all throughout his high school career and his AAU career. He really has the ability to break down a defense, compete defensively and knows how to make guys better.”

Zoe Noel’s business, Zonuts and Lattes, started from a love of donuts and coffee. Having been an experienced barista for a couple of years, Noel had the qualifications to create the perfect lattes and cold brews she sells now.

Noel approached her dad, Eric Noel, with the concept of the business she dreamed of.

“I went to my dad one day – and he’s very crafty – and I was like, ‘We should start a mobile coffee and donut shop,’” she said. “He was like, ‘You’re crazy. Let’s do it.’”

If you keep up with any independent news outlets, you’ve probably heard some version of this a hundred times already: The deployment of National Guard troops into American cities reminds people of the lead-up to the Kent State shooting.

At first, the comparison might seem surface-level and obvious. Both involve the deployment of the National Guard against civilian protests; both involve the American government threatening those who will not comply and Americans who refuse to be silent. But the parallels between these two periods of U.S. history are much more extensive than that.

At a press conference the day before the May 4 massacre, former Ohio Gov. James Rhodes gave a statement that contained language highly reminiscent of the rhetoric we are seeing from the current administration. At this press conference, he castigated protestors as members of “dissident” groups and stated that:

I had the joy of attending Dr. Rice Broocks and Dr. Eric Hedin’s presentation on “God’s Not Dead,” a movement started by Dr. Rice Broocks in response to the hit novel that has also inspired the movie series. Broocks, a Bible Belt pastor from good ol’ Rocky Top, Tennessee, came to Dr. Eric Hedin, a physics professor from the University of Washington, to gather the facts on whether or not there is a divine creator.

Broocks and Hedin began their discussion at the Kent State University KIVA by gifting everyone in the audience their own copy of the novel. After the crowd erupted into an Evangelical-adjacent cheer, they moved on to their possible evidence — already established YouTube videos and simplifications of extremely complicated processes.

They will utilize physics, mathematics and philosophy. Metaphysics.

Each school year, bikes are continuously stolen on campus, not by students but by campus visitors, loiterers or people who aren’t a part of the on-campus community.

Recently, Kent State students have taken to Reddit to express concerns about their bikes being stolen, specifically outside the Centennials. One user by the name of itsCamaro expressed, “It is never students stealing from other students. It is locals. … Thugs tend to wait thinking students will ‘give up.’ Had a friend see his bike months later, and the guy got a felony.”

Once bikes are stolen, it’s difficult to track them down for a few reasons, such as not knowing your bike’s serial number and the tendency for thieves to sell the bike after it’s stolen. This is even more troublesome because once sold, it could be harder to track it down.
