This fall, the university will officially welcome a chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. This historic civil rights organization is focused on equality, empowerment and advocacy.

President of NAACP Za’Nya Henderson and vice president Zora Brown launched the NAACP chapter at Kent State as a continuation of the passion they have carried since high school.

Parker Heller, junior business management major and president of Students Supporting Israel, was one of the few college students to receive an invitation to the White House.

The invitation was for a meeting with the Anti-Semitism Task Force on June 25, where 13 SSI students across the country were invited. Heller was one of those lucky few.

SSI is a pro-Israel campus movement with over 200 chapters worldwide. Heller believes he received an invitation to the briefing because of his efforts in recharting the Kent State chapter. He also expressed appreciation for his fellow chapter members and the Jewish Faculty, Staff and Friends Association for helping him carry out leadership responsibilities during the school year.

Former Kent City Councilman John Kuhar served Ward 4 for 17 years before his 2023 election loss to Christopher Hook. Now, he’s trying to forge a comeback.

Kuhar was a “born and raised” Kent resident who worked in various trades such as electrical and plumbing before deciding to make a run for council. He said he wanted to improve the city and fix a lot of unhappiness around town.

“A lot of the local people were complaining about how things were done, how we were counterproductive to business and how our streets and sidewalks were stinking,” Kuhar said. “I’ve been the type of person that doesn’t like to complain about stuff. If there’s something and there’s a way I can try to help, that’s what I’ll do.”

The spotlight at Porthouse Theatre this summer continues to celebrate tradition and aspiring actors, with more upcoming productions yet to come.

With Porthouse Theatre’s summer season in full swing, Tony Hardin, the executive producer, described it as a “season of traditions,” featuring musicals such as “Fiddler on the Roof,” “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and “School of Rock.“

While the theater remains open to the public, Hardin said Porthouse Theatre “takes pride” in providing opportunities for Kent State students, and giving them a space to work with professional actors across the country.

81.5% of college students snack while studying, according to a recent survey from Mometrix.

Joshua Barnett, from Mometrix, a test preparation company, recently conducted a survey on what treats college students eat on while preparing for their next exam.

Due to the variety of customer ages who use their materials, he surveyed students as young as 13 up to graduate students. Barnett said Mometrix was inspired to conduct this survey to get feedback from their customers’ study habits.

Following a TikTok video that accused the city of Kent of contaminating the Akron water supply by dumping materials, city officials have labeled the video as misinformation.

The now deleted video titled “City of Kent uses the Akron water supply for dumping (again)” was uploaded on July 8 by user JK Blake, and it immediately prompted the Kent Parks and Recreation Department to release a statement after the post received thousands of views. Blake’s follow-up posts on the topic have also been deleted.

Angela Manley, Kent’s director of parks and recreation, wrote the statement, which explained the department made no wrongdoings in its actions. She said she was surprised someone would make such an accusation.

A bold, colorful butterfly has landed in downtown Kent, stretching across the side of the Townhall II building as a vibrant new mural aiming to spark conversations about mental health. The piece is the latest installment in the “Bipolar Butterfly Project” by Kimmy Henderson, a public art initiative aimed at raising awareness about mental health.

Titled “Tosha’s Garden,” the mural features a butterfly with one wing melting away, surrounded by various plants and flowers. The butterfly represents transformation and the duality of mental illness, a central theme in Henderson’s project that shares her experience living with bipolar disorder.

“During my first manic episode, I painted a butterfly to represent metamorphosis and growth, and for whatever reason, that I can only attribute to my manic brain, I made the left side dripping away,” Henderson said. “I shared that with my audience and was very transparent about my mental health.”

After several delays in the construction process, Kent’s government finally has its own city hall building to call home.

In the past, the city has shared buildings with the police and fire departments, and used older buildings to serve as a city hall. Despite these options, Kent residents hoped for a single facility to house city staff and council members, said Kent Service Director Melanie Baker.

That wish has finally become a reality, as the building opened its doors on June 18 for a ribbon cutting ceremony and held an open house during the Heritage Festival on July 5.
