Why the Big Give Matters! 🚨
Every year, the Big Give helps us cover the unexpected costs that come with rescuing animals—costs that are becoming more frequent and more expensive.
When we take in a dog from animal control, it’s often based only on a photo or a plea from staff. We rarely know what medical issues we’re walking into.
Lately, one of the biggest challenges we’ve faced again and again is heartworm disease.
What used to happen only once or twice a year is now happening dozens of times. Each case is costly, time-consuming, and heartbreaking.
•A heartworm-positive dog can’t be adopted right away.
•They must go through a month of pre-medication before treatment can even begin.
•The treatment itself is expensive and lengthy, followed by months of strict activity restriction.
•We do our best to keep these dogs in our care until the final treatment is complete—or ensure adopters are fully committed to the restrictions.
Adoption fees alone don’t come close to covering the cost of treatment. That’s why the Big Give is vital. Your donations make it possible for us to save these dogs and give them a real chance at adoption.
🤯And here’s the reality: today alone, three of our current residents—Isa, Louise, and Thelma—are either already in treatment or about to begin their fight against heartworm disease.
