More than a century before modern submarines, an American inventor helped create a remarkable weapon for the Revolutionary War.
On September 7, 1776, Sergeant Ezra Lee piloted Turtle, a small, one-man submersible designed by Connecticut inventor David Bushnell, into New York Harbor. His mission was to approach the British warship HMS Eagle from underwater and attach an explosive charge to its hull.
The attempt failed, but the Turtle is widely recognized as the first submarine used in combat.
It was an extraordinary example of American ingenuity at a time when the new nation was confronting one of the world’s greatest military powers with limited resources.
