Idaho River Publications

Idaho River Publications Idaho River Publications is a publisher of high-quality, comprehensive, waterproof hiking and whitewater guidebooks. They can take any abuse you can dish out.

Idaho River Publications is an independent publishing company based in Hailey, ID. Owner and publisher, Matt Leidecker, grew up exploring and guiding on the rivers and in the mountains of central Idaho. IRP’s first title, "The Middle Fork of the Salmon – A Comprehensive Guide" was an instant favorite among guides and private floaters. It won the 2006 National Outdoor Book Award. More than 10,000 c

opies of three different editions have been sold to date

The rigors of the river environment necessitated printing on waterproof YUPO paper that is virtually indestructible. Both the Middle Fork and Rogue River (2008) spiral bound guidebooks can be completely submerged in the water. The UV-cured inks will not stick or peel when the books dry out. The books even float, and have survived several flips and thrashings on the river. Like the river guides, IRPs hiking guidebooks are printed on the same bombproof waterproof paper. They can be taken on the trail in any condition, spring, summer, winter, or fall. Clip the book to the outside of your pack, or stuff it in with the rest of your gear.

Photo a day #899. After ditching the snowmobiles at the trailhead, we walked about a mile and a half to our first camp beneath some grand north facing terrain. I played with a little light painting to create this stack of four different images I merged into one single shot on Photoshop.

Photo a Day #898 It's been a while since I have posted a "one a day" image. A recent adventure with Craig Wolfrom Photography and Niels Meyer into a remote drainage in the Pioneer mountains generated some worthy winter imagery. This is an image of Niels appreciation the alpenglow over the high peaks. We all agreed that is was a good effort for a Friday afternoon start to a long weekend adventure. More to follow. Enjoy.

Exploring the Boulder-White Clouds - Highlights: All of the Idaho River Publication guidebooks are subtitled "a Comprehensive Guide." In order to develop a comprehensive understanding of a landscape, knowing something about the "bones" of the mountains is important. Each guidebook includes a section describing the geology of the region often accompanied by original maps like this overview of the rock units found in the Boulder-White Clouds mountains. Dive into these books and you will truly broaden your understanding of the landscape! www.idahoriverpublications.com

The danger is CONSIDERABLE. You're most likely to trigger avalanches big enough to bury people on slopes where the wind has formed drifts or stiffened the snow surface. Avalanches are possible in steep, wind-sheltered terrain—even at lower elevations. Avalanches may be triggered remotely—from gentler terrain above, below, and to the sides of steep slopes. **** MARSH CREEK UPDATE ****
A report from kayakers who just ran Marsh Creek found a massive river wide log about 6 miles downstream... They were able to skip over it in kayaks, but as the river drops it will become an issue!!! Please share.

For those of you thinking about the Middle Fork. I finally heard some updates indirectly from Kyle Irby who hiked from Highway 21 to two miles below Big Hole. These are his shots. Here is his report:

"I hiked Marsh Creek from 21 to 2 miles below the confluence with Bear where the trail ends in the river right cliff wall yesterday afternoon. May 7th.

There are no significant strainers or debris as of yesterday. There are some trees but there is always another channel open. There was some evidence of avalanche activity but nothing new blocking the channel. I did not scout the section from 100 yards below 21 to roughly 1/4 above the gauging station on Marsh due to fading light."

Outdoor Idaho's latest hours long special on the Boulder White Clouds is available to watch online through Dec. 19. Croy the wonderdog and I helped film a segment on the Jerry Peak Wilderness. Check it out!

We visit the three new wilderness areas in central Idaho -- the White Clouds, the Hemingway-Boulders, and the Jim McClure-Jerry Peak wilderness -- to tell the 50 year story of how the threat of an open pit molybdenum mine eventually led to a unanimous vote for Wilderness in Congress. And we examine…

MAP LOVERS - One of my favorite "extra" rewards offered in this Kickstarter campaign is the HUGE (60" x 49") 7.5 minute topo WALL MAP of the entire Boulder White Cloud region. The map includes all of the guidebook iconography (peak names, stream crossings, mileage, mines, wilderness boundaries, land management) and is a GREAT visual resource for adventure planning! Check out the campaign - http://tinyurl.com/BWC-Kick
