Detroit, MI - On the evening of June 8, 2012 the fire activity began to pick up throughout 'The D' especially on the Eastside. Engines 50, 58, 47, Ladder 23, Squad 6 & Chief 9 were assigned to Hickory & Manning for a dwelling fire. Immediately after turning out of quarters, the header could be seen in the sky. Units were now getting reports of a civilian trapped.
Engine 50 arrived and reported fire in two dwellings. Civilians in the street were frantic and stated people were trapped at the windows ready to jump from both houses in the rear. 50s team split up and stretched 2 lines. Lieutenant Tozer & Fireman Palm forced entry into the occupied exposure. With very little time to spare and a slight delay in getting water, Palm masked up and bolted for the 2nd floor were he found a victim lying on the bed with fire all around her blow-torching into her room. He scooped her up and exited the building where members of Squad 6 tended to her severe burns while awaiting the arrival of EMS. A positive water source was now in place and the fire in both the original fire building (vacant) the the occupied exposure were knocked down. Engine 46 & Ladder 19 were also on scene.

Known as Black Sunday, 7 yrs ago today, the FDNY lost -3- members at -2- seperate fires. Lieutenant Meyran & Fireman Bellew of L-27 & 4 other members were forced to jump from a 5th floor window on East 178 Street in The Bronx. Meyran & Bellew succumbed from injuries. A couple of hours later, Firefighter Scalfani of L-103 made the Supreme Sacrifice at a basement fire in East New York, Brooklyn. Gentlemen, your actions will never be forgotten. Ever.

The fire on 178 Street brought attention to how we as firefighters have a tool to self-evacuate out of a window. The Brothers 7 yrs ago, had no option. There were none immediately available. They jumped. Due to their Sacrifice & dedication of active members that designed our current device known as the Personal Safety System that enables us to lower ourselves by rope. The legacies of Meyran, Bellew & injured members Stolowski, Cawley, Cool & DiBernardo will live forever.
