📷 Old Tavernier has stories hiding in plain sight.

From Old Settlers Park and views of Tavernier Key to the historic downtown and the pink Tavernier Hotel, this little photo walk took me through more than a century of Florida Keys history.

Some of the old buildings are still standing, quietly telling the story of the Keys before they became a tourist destination.

There are places in the Florida Keys where the past hasn’t completely disappeared.

Indian Key is one of them.

Nearly two centuries after a thriving community was destroyed during the Second Seminole War, you can still trace its story through foundations hidden beneath the trees.

I’ve passed this little island more times than I can count, and its history never gets old.

One of my favorite stories in the Keys—and a reminder that there’s a lot out here you’ll never see from the Overseas Highway.

You can find Jimmy Buffett all over the Florida Keys if you know where to look. Sometimes it’s not a landmark or a plaque—just a few hand-painted signs tucked behind the palms in Key Largo.

Of all the old reef lights in the Florida Keys, Carysfort has always been my favorite.

I captured this footage several years ago while we were out at Carysfort Reef by boat. There’s something incredible about seeing that old iron structure standing alone above the reef, surrounded by the Atlantic.

Carysfort was built because this beautiful reef was also incredibly dangerous to ships traveling along the Florida coast. Before modern navigation, vessels could easily find themselves on the coral, and the lighthouse gave mariners a warning before it was too late.

These reef lights are more than landmarks. They’re part of the history of the Florida Keys — built because of the reef, the shipwrecks and the generations of people who navigated these waters.

And once they’re gone, we don’t get them back.

Alligator Reef Light is being saved and restored. So I can’t help but ask — if we can save Alligator, why can’t we save Carysfort too?

I hope we do.
