Think Scotland is all castles and Highlands? Wait until you see what’s a ferry ride away from the Isle of Skye.

We took the ferry from Uig on the Isle of Skye to Tarbert on Harris, brought our campervan along, and spent one night + two days exploring Lewis & Harris. Somehow, that was enough for it to become my favorite place in Scotland.

A few postcards from our route ✨

🌊 Luskentyre Beach — our first taste of those white-sand beaches and turquoise water I still can’t believe are in Scotland.

🪨 Calanais Standing Stones — standing among stones that have been here for 5,000 years was one of those how is this real? moments.

🏡 Gearrannan Blackhouse Village — stepping into a piece of island history and seeing how people lived here for generations.

♟️ Uig Bay — wide-open sand, gorgeous views and the area where the famous Lewis Chessmen were discovered.

🏄‍♀️ Traigh na Beirghe — another ridiculously beautiful beach, this time with North Atlantic waves and local surfers.

🐑 And the sheep — everywhere.

One night. Two days. A campervan. A ferry ride. And a place I would go back to in a heartbeat. ✨

If you have a little girl who loves American Girl, add this to your Orlando day. 🎀💕

Watching her doll get her hair done at the salon and seeing how much she loved the entire experience was just the sweetest. 🥹✨

Also, doll cosmetologist might officially be the cutest job title ever. 🎀💇‍♀️ Watching them work their magic on those tiny hairstyles was so much fun!

✨Tip: Book the salon appointment ahead of time on the American Girl website! We didn’t make an appointment and ended up waiting TWO HOURS to get in. It gets busy, so book the day before to save you a long wait!

3 Reasons to Visit the Isle of Harris & Lewis 🏴

Of everywhere we traveled in Scotland, Harris & Lewis is my favorite. By far. 🤍

It felt wild, peaceful, remote and unlike anywhere else we visited. A little harder to reach and a little less traveled—which made me love it even more.

🌊 1. The Beaches + Surf (see surfers at the end)
White sand, turquoise water and wild Atlantic waves…in Scotland. Luskentyre may be the famous one, but beautiful, uncrowded beaches stretch along the western coast. The Outer Hebrides are also one of Scotland’s best surfing destinations, thanks to North Atlantic swells and exposed west-facing beaches.

🪨 2. Thousands of Years of History
The Calanais Standing Stones were erected around 5,000 years ago, and history is everywhere here—from ancient brochs and traditional blackhouses to archaeological sites scattered across the islands. You can even visit the area where the famous Lewis Chessmen were discovered on the Isle of Lewis nearly 200 years ago.

⛰️ 3. The Wild Landscapes
Harris is rugged and mountainous, with rocky coastline and turquoise bays. Head into Lewis and the scenery transforms into open moorland, lochs and windswept Atlantic coastline.

✨ Lewis and Harris aren’t two separate islands. They’re two regions of the same island—the largest in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides.

If your Scotland road trip ends on Skye, take the ferry a little farther. The Outer Hebrides are worth it. 🏴⛴️

This was my favorite place in Scotland, and I’d go back in a heartbeat. 🤍
