♟️I planned an entire Scotland road trip around these tiny medieval chess pieces. 🏴

If you love finding the stories behind the places you visit, save this one for Scotland.

Before leaving Edinburgh, we spent our last morning at the National Museum of Scotland to see the famous Lewis Chessmen. I think I spent over an hour admiring them, going back and forth between the exhibits because I was completely fascinated. 😂

♟️A few facts:
The Lewis Chessmen date to the late 12th–early 13th century and were likely made in Norway. Most are intricately carved from walrus ivory, and their little faces have SO much personality. 👑

They were discovered around 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s remote Outer Hebrides, more than 600 years after they were made. The hoard is traditionally associated with Uig on the west coast of Lewis, an area filled with beautiful white sandy beaches.

Seeing them in the museum was only half of the plan. 👀

After Edinburgh, we picked up our campervan and headed 363 miles + a ferry ride toward the Isle of Lewis, eventually making our way to the remote beaches of Uig where the chessmen were discovered. 🚐⛴️🏴

✨ Want to do this too?
Add the National Museum of Scotland to your Edinburgh itinerary, then add Lewis & Harris to your Scotland road trip. There’s something pretty incredible about seeing a piece of history in a museum and then traveling across Scotland to stand in the landscape where it was discovered centuries later.

💡HAIRY HIPPO TIP: Find something that fascinates you and build a trip around it! Sometimes one little piece of history can lead you somewhere you never would have thought to visit. 🤍

🚐 NEXT UP: Pick up the campervan—we’re officially hitting the road!

🏴 DAY 2: HARRY POTTER’S EDINBURGH ⚡️🏰

Day 2 was all about Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling + exploring Edinburgh! Rowling wrote much of the Harry Potter series while living here, and the city is full of real connections, fan-favorite spots, and streets that feel straight out of the wizarding world.

Save this walking route! 👇

🏰 1. The Vennel Viewpoint
Start with an incredible view of Edinburgh Castle surrounded by historic stone buildings and winding streets.

🚶 5–7 min → The Elephant House

☕ 2. The Elephant House
J.K. Rowling really did write here while working on Harry Potter. Known as the “birthplace” of Harry Potter, it’s a must for Potter fans! ⚡️

🚶 2 min → Greyfriars Kirkyard

🪦 3. Greyfriars Kirkyard
Wander the cemetery and look for some VERY familiar names, including Thomas Riddell, William McGonagall + Elizabeth Moodie. 👀

🚶 3–5 min → Victoria Street

🌈 4. Victoria Street
The real-life Diagon Alley. The curved cobblestone street is packed with colorful storefronts, restaurants + independent shops.

Shop, grab something to eat, and stop at Museum Context for all things Harry Potter. 🪄

🚶 10–12 min → Blackwell’s

📖 5. Blackwell’s Bookshop
The perfect ending to a literary walking tour! Pick up a book from the oldest bookshop in Edinburgh for your Scotland road trip. 🚐📚

I grabbed Fade Into You by Scottish author Catriona Child - and it was the perfect read while road-tripping through Scotland. Catriona Child

⚡️ THE ROUTE:
The Vennel → Elephant House → Greyfriars Kirkyard → Victoria Street → Blackwell’s

♟️ NEXT UP: National Museum of Scotland + the famous Lewis Chessmen—little chess pieces with a BIG connection to where this road trip is headed! 👀

Calanais Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis.

How to get there from Edinburgh:

🚐 Edinburgh → Drive through the Scottish Highlands → Ullapool → ⛴️ Ferry to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis → 🗿 Calanais Standing Stones

Rent a campervan in Edinburgh and turn getting there into part of the adventure. Drive through the Highlands to Ullapool, then bring your campervan right onto the ferry for the crossing to the Isle of Lewis.

Once you arrive in Stornoway, the Calanais Standing Stones are only about a 30–40 minute drive across the island.

This is one of those places where the journey is just as memorable as the destination—winding Highland roads, tiny villages, ferry crossings, remote landscapes, and your little home on wheels coming along for all of it. 🤍

🚐 Follow along for more from our Scotland caravan road trip! I’ll be sharing our route, favorite stops, what it was like traveling Scotland by campervan with a little one, and some of the incredible remote places we found along the way. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✨

✨ DAY 1: GLASGOW → EDINBURGH

Our Scotland road trip started by flying into Glasgow because the flights were MUCH cheaper! ✈️

Instead of staying in Glasgow, head straight to Edinburgh to officially start your adventure. (See my Hairy Hippo Tip below! 👇)

🚆From Glasgow Airport, take the Airport Express 500 into Glasgow to Queens Street Station and catch the ScotRail train to Edinburgh. The train is only about a 45-minute ride, but I recommend giving yourself around 2 hours total to get from the airport to Edinburgh.

🏨 Arrive at Edinburgh Waverley Station. From Waverley Station, it was about a 15-minute walk to George Street (highly recommended staying on this street). Our accommodation was Eden Locke.

The location was perfect and within walking distance of so many of Edinburgh’s top sights. Eden Locke was beautiful, centrally located, and the perfect place to stay before picking up the campervan and starting the road trip! 🚐🏴

🛝 After checking in, head out to explore and if you have children visit the Princes Street Gardens Playground. Because when you’re traveling with a toddler, the playground is always the first stop!

Princes Street Gardens sits directly beneath Edinburgh Castle in the heart of the city, and the playground is even castle-themed! Our toddler could play while taking in those first views of Edinburgh Castle towering above.

The gardens sit between Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town, making this such an easy place to wander, get your bearings, and soak in that first bit of Edinburgh.

😴 After a long travel day, we grabbed some sandwiches, settled into the room, and called it an early night.

⚡️ NEXT: Day 2 — Harry Potter’s Edinburgh

💡 HAIRY HIPPO TIP: When booking, check flights into BOTH Glasgow and Edinburgh! I found flying into Glasgow was significantly cheaper. But skip Glasgow and go directly to Edinburgh! Glasgow has a more modern urban feel, while Edinburgh gives you that historic, medieval, storybook Scotland atmosphere.

🦛 Save this for your Scotland road trip + follow for Day 2, when the Harry Potter magic begins! ⚡️
