They aren't "alleged" crimes if you're a convicted felon !!
BREAKING: Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin brings the HAMMER down on Donald Trump by announcing an investigation to get the "entire paper trail" for his jaw-droppingly corrupt demand for $230 million in taxpayer dollars.
Trump wants to rob us blind but Raskin won't stand for it...
“Our reading is that, even though this is a private settlement, it doesn’t have to be disclosed anywhere until there is an accounting of where all the money has gone at the end of the year,” Raskin told The New Republic.
The "settlement" in question is a demand from Trump that the Justice Department pay him personally for launching investigations into his alleged crimes. Trump himself has already admitted that it's "awfully strange" that he will essentially be "paying myself" with our money.
Since he's trying to obtain this massive sum of cash through an internal Justice Department claims process, the details are likely to remain confidential, allowing Trump to carry out this heist in partial secrecy. In other words, Trump could get his hands on the money and the American people wouldn't find out until a future date, at which point it would be too late to stop him.
“The domestic emoluments clause says the president may not receive any compensation at all from the U.S. government or the states beyond his official salary,” Raskin said. “This means he cannot be ordering government officials to write checks to the president.”
Raskin isn't pulling any punches in this investigation. He's demanding all internal communications between the White House and the Justice Department, including those involving Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump's former personal attorney, one of the individuals who will ultimately make the decision about the payment.
Raskin is particularly interested in any communications that demonstrate that Trump is exerting pressure on the DOJ to sign off on the crooked settlement. Since the DOJ is now riddled with MAGA yes men like Blanche and Pam Bondi, it seems exceedingly likely that the "settlement" will be greenlit.
“It goes without saying that anybody in the Trump administration who violates the law is now expecting a pardon from Donald Trump,” Raskin said. “If you want the protection of the president, you need to comply with his every wish.”
As he consolidates power and grows more overtly fascist, Trump is getting more and more comfortable engaging in naked criminality. This "settlement" is nothing less than him reaching his grubby hand into the public treasury, grabbing fistfuls of cash, and shoveling it into his pockets. It is, without exaggeration, the most flagrantly corrupt act by an American president in history.
“We want the entire paper trail. We’re looking for any correspondence, memoranda, or records of conversations between the White House and the Department of Justice," Raskin said. "If we had subpoena power, we would be going after that.”
The congressman further added that if Democrats were in power, they could subpoena "any interactions between Blanche and Trump or Trump and other DOJ officials.” If they retake power during the mid-term elections, this objective will be at the top of the docket.
“We are demanding this information for the public,” Raskin added.
“I will say that we should consider this a civic emergency from the standpoint of the Judiciary Committee,” he continued. “Are we going to have presidents from here on in just shaking down the Department of Justice or other parts of the U.S. government for money to put in their pockets?”
