NEW EPISODE: Kevin Hazzard on No One's Coming, Ebola Rescue Missions & the People Who Run Toward Danger

What would make someone voluntarily fly into the middle of an Ebola outbreak when everyone else is trying to get out?

This week on Hazard Class, I sit down with bestselling author, former paramedic, and journalist Kevin Hazzard to discuss his incredible new book, No One's Coming.

Kevin takes us behind the scenes of one of the most remarkable medical rescue operations in modern history—the evacuation of Ebola patients during the 2014 West African outbreak. We dive into the pilots, nurses, physicians, and emergency responders who risked everything to save lives when the world was gripped by fear.

In this episode, we discuss:

• The true story behind No One's Coming
• How Kevin transforms real events into page-turning narratives
• The psychology of high-performance responders
• Ebola, COVID-19, and lessons in preparedness
• Why some people willingly run toward danger
• Adapting books into movies and television

If you're a firefighter, paramedic, hazmat technician, healthcare professional, pilot, emergency manager, or simply love incredible true stories, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

The firehouse conversations that should never have been recorded... finally have been.

Welcome to Episode 1 of Out of Service, the new podcast from Jake Ryks and Tyler DeLuca. No training. No tactics. No PowerPoints. Just the kind of conversations that happen when the rigs are back in service, the chores are done, and firefighters are trying to kill time between calls.

In this first episode, we debate truckies vs. engine companies, draft the ultimate fire alarm tool assignment, swap ridiculous fireground stories, discuss the return of cigarette ads, and somehow end up talking about illegal ni****ne products, boa constrictors, pooping in bunker gear, and a shockingly expensive EV battery firefighting gadget.

If you've ever sat around a firehouse kitchen table, you'll feel right at home.

Listen now and let us know: What's the dumbest conversation you've ever had while technically "working"?

As first responders, we spend our careers trying to explain what this job is really like. The highs, the lows, the victories, the heartbreak, and the things we carry home long after the call is over.

The truth is, words usually aren't enough.

That's why Into the Unknown: A Paramedic's Journey matters.

This documentary gives the public a rare, honest look inside the world of EMS and the realities facing paramedics every day. It tackles mental health, burnout, staffing shortages, trauma, and the human side of emergency medicine in a way I've never seen captured before.

I've watched the film multiple times, and I genuinely believe it's one of the most important stories ever told about our profession.

The team behind the film is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help bring it to theaters and audiences around the world. If you've ever wanted people to better understand what first responders do, this is a project worth supporting.

Share the campaign. Help get this story in front of the people who need to see it.

NEW HAZARD CLASS EPISODE!

This week I sat down with filmmaker Tom Putnam and retired L.A. County Assistant Chief Steve Martin to talk about their incredible new documentary:

Into the Unknown: A Paramedic’s Journey

If you’ve ever wondered what life is really like for paramedics and EMS professionals, this film doesn’t hold back.

We talk about:

-The making of the documentary
-The realities of modern EMS
-PTSD and mental health in first responders
-Staffing shortages and burnout
-Capturing real emergency calls on camera
-Why this film matters for firefighters, medics, dispatchers, nurses, and civilians alike

I’ve seen this film multiple times now and honestly, there’s nothing else like it. It’s raw, emotional, brutally honest, and one of the best portrayals of emergency services I’ve ever watched.

This is more than a movie — it’s a look inside the lives of the people answering 911 calls every single day.

We also kick off my own 16-week firefighter transformation journey using the Firefighter Peak Performance system. From “fat to fit,” we’re documenting the process in real time.

THE HAZARD CLASS PODCAST is officially getting uncomfortable!

Today kicks off “HAZARD CLASS: From Fat to Fit” — a 16-week fitness and accountability challenge where I, Jake Ryks, am partnering with Ryan Provencher to see what happens when you stop making excuses and start putting in the work.

For the next 16 weeks, Ryan will be providing physical training, nutrition guidance, accountability, and coaching as we document the entire process in real time. If you know Ryan, then you already know this isn’t influencer fitness nonsense. He’s built a reputation through Firefighter Peak Performance and his work with CRACKYL Magazine by helping firefighters and emergency responders perform better, move better, and stay alive longer in a profession that destroys people physically.

We’ll be posting updates every 2 weeks, including progress, setbacks, workouts, nutrition changes, and the reality of trying to balance fitness with work, travel, stress, and life in the fire service.

The kickoff podcast drops this Wednesday.

This thing starts today. No hiding now.

Tyler breaks down the two types of disgruntled firefighters every officer has to deal with — the ones who just need to be heard, and the ones who are lost in the firehouse chaos.
