Sometimes the best travel memories are the ones you never see coming.

We were simply wandering the side streets of Tarempa in Indonesia when this friendly gentleman stopped us and asked if his children could take a photo with Johan. We happily said yes and ended up chatting for a while.

Later, we learned he was Mudahir, the head of the Jemaja District. We had no idea at the time—we just knew he was incredibly kind and welcoming.

It’s moments like these that remind us that travel isn’t just about the places you visit. It’s about the people you meet along the way.

Thank you for making us feel so welcome, Tarempa. We hope to return one day. ❤️🇮🇩

One of the best parts of living on a residential cruise ship is that the crew quickly become more than crew—they become family. ❤️

Meet Chaman.

If you’ve ever started your morning with breakfast aboard the Odyssey, there’s a good chance he’s already greeted you with that big smile and maybe even remembered exactly how you like your omelet.

It’s the little things that make a big difference. A warm hello. A familiar face. Someone who remembers your preferences without asking. Those moments turn a ship into a home.

Chaman’s smile is contagious, his service is exceptional, and somehow he always seems to make the perfect omelet to start the day.

Thank you, Chaman, for helping make our floating home feel a little more welcoming every single morning. ⚓😊

$4.74 Lunch for Two… and a Wildlife Show! 🇮🇩

Today we stopped at La Luna in Tarempa and enjoyed an amazing local lunch for just $4.74 USD total.

Our meal included:
🍛 Nasi Goreng
🍢 Chicken Satay
🥤 Coca-Cola
💧 Two bottled waters

Not bad for less than five bucks!

The food was great, but the unexpected entertainment stole the show. While sitting above the water enjoying lunch, we noticed what looked like baby Komodo dragons swimming and hanging out beneath the restaurant. After a little research, we discovered they were actually monitor lizards!

Apparently, waterfront dining in the Anambas Islands comes with its own wildlife channel. 😂

One of the things we love most about traveling is stumbling across places we never knew existed. Great food, friendly people, and monitor lizards swimming below our table wasn’t on today’s bingo card, but we’re glad it happened.

Lunch in Tarempa for $1.12 🍜🇮🇩

One of our favorite things about traveling the world is finding places we’d never visit otherwise.

Today we stopped at a local waterfront restaurant in Tarempa, Anambas Islands, and ordered a plate of Mie Goreng Tarempa, a local noodle dish made with flat noodles, tuna, vegetables, and a savory sauce topped with crispy fried onions.

The meal cost just 20,000 Indonesian Rupiah ($1.12 USD).

Back home, it’s hard to find much of anything for $1.12, let alone a freshly cooked meal overlooking the harbor.

One of the things we love most about this lifestyle is stepping off the ship and experiencing everyday life in places we never expected to visit. Before this voyage, we’d never even heard of Tarempa. Now we’ll always remember it as the place where we sat waterfront, enjoyed a local meal, and spent just over a dollar.

What’s the cheapest meal you’ve had while traveling?

We may look small next to the mega ships.

And that’s exactly the point. 😄

Our size allows us to visit ports, harbors, and destinations that many of the larger ships can’t reach. While the giants sail past, we’re often docking right in the heart of places that feel more authentic, less crowded, and closer to the local culture.

But the real difference isn’t the ship.

It’s the community.

This isn’t a one-week vacation for us—it’s home. We know our neighbors, our crew, and the friends we’ve made from around the world. We celebrate milestones together, share meals together, and create memories that last far beyond any single port.

So yes, we may look like a fishing boat parked next to the giants. 😂

But she’s ours.

A floating home. A global neighborhood. And a community unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. ❤️⚓🌎

After months of visiting ports around the world, we arrived somewhere we had never even heard of before… Tarempa, Anambas Islands, Indonesia.

Have you ever heard of it?

Yeah… us neither. 😂

Today is a little different because Tarempa is a tender port, which means our ship stays anchored offshore and we take a small boat into town. There’s just something fun about arriving by tender—it makes you feel like you’re discovering a hidden destination.

That’s one of the things we love most about living on a residential cruise ship. We don’t just visit the famous destinations—we get introduced to places we’d probably never find on our own.

Surrounded by lush green mountains and calm blue waters, Tarempa looks like one of those hidden gems that hasn’t been overrun by tourism. Just a small island community, fishing boats, and stunning scenery in every direction.

Sometimes the places you’ve never heard of end up becoming your favorite memories.

Now we’re heading off the ship to explore. Who knows what we’ll discover today?

🚢 Another surprise feature!

We were honored to be featured by Supercar Blondie as they shared our story of selling our rental car business, buying a cabin aboard Villa Vie Odyssey, and trading life on land for a life of travel.

What started with a single 16-day cruise has turned into an adventure we never could have imagined. Today we’re living aboard a residential cruise ship, working remotely, visiting countries we once only dreamed about, and sharing the journey with all of you.

One of the things we loved about this article is that it highlights something many people don’t realize: we’re not retired. We still work from the ship while exploring the world one port at a time.

A huge thank you to everyone who follows, comments, shares our videos, and supports our channel. Your encouragement is what keeps us documenting this incredible lifestyle.

If you’ve been following along, what’s the one question you’ve always wanted to ask about living on a cruise ship full-time?

Goodbye Singapore… until next month! 🇸🇬

After four amazing days in Singapore, it’s time for Odyssey to set sail once again.

One of the things we love about returning to the same port is that each visit feels a little different. This time we explored new neighborhoods, found a hidden local hawker center, enjoyed incredible food, and finally checked a few more items off our Singapore bucket list.

As we pulled away from the harbor, we were treated to another beautiful sunset over the city skyline. Moments like these remind us why we chose this life.

The best part? We’ll be back next month to discover even more.

Until then, onward to our next adventure aboard Villa Vie Odyssey. 🌅

After asking our Grab driver where the locals eat, he pointed us to this hidden hawker center just a short walk from the ship.

We decided to give it a try and are so glad we did.

Johan ordered the Black Bean Beef with rice and a fried egg, and it was absolutely delicious. The portions were generous, the flavors were incredible, and the entire meal cost just a fraction of what we’d pay back home.

One of our favorite things about slow travel is finding places like this that we never would have discovered on our own. No tourist crowds, just great local food and everyday life in Singapore.

Safe to say this little hidden gem did not disappoint, and we’ll definitely be back when Odyssey returns next month.

Have you ever skipped the tourist restaurants and followed a local recommendation instead? 🍜

Some people spend their lives waiting for “someday.”
We finally decided to stop waiting. 🌅⚓️

No perfect timing.
No perfect plan.
Just a decision to choose experiences, sunsets, and time together while we still could. 🌎🛳️

And honestly… we’ve never felt more free.
