After high school, Rodman initially worked as an overnight janitor at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, but a sudden growth spurt from 5 ft 11 in to 6 ft 7 in motivated him to revisit basketball, even as he struggled with feelings of being awkward and withdrawn due to his rapid physical change.

Dennis Rodman's basketball career began at Cooke County College, where he showcased his potential by averaging 17.6 points and 13.3 rebounds in a single semester, before transferring to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. There, he excelled as a three-time NAIA All-American, leading the NAIA in rebounding twice and averaging 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds over three seasons. His standout performance in 1986, including a remarkable 46-point game with a record-tying 32 rebounds, propelled his team to the NAIA semifinals and ranked them third nationally, ultimately earning him an invitation to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, where he was named MVP and caught the eye of the NBA's Detroit Pistons.

Dennis Rodman's close bond with Byrne Rich during their time together at a summer basketball camp in the early 1980s served as a crucial support system for both individuals, with Rodman providing friendship and encouragement to the shy, withdrawn teenager while also finding solace in the Rich family's rural lifestyle amidst his own personal struggles. However, this relationship soured in 2013 after a racial slur allegedly used by Byrne's mother led Rodman to cease communication with the Rich family, despite the positive impact they had on his life during college.

Everyone has heard of Black Wall Street.Meet the founder, O.W. Gurley.
In 1905 Gurley and his wife sold their property in Noble County and moved 80 miles to the oil boom town of Tulsa. Gurley purchased 40 acres of land in North Tulsa and established his first business, a rooming house on a dusty road that would become Greenwood Avenue. He subdivided his plot into residential and commercial lots and eventually opened a grocery store.
As the community grew around him, Gurley prospered. Between 1910 and 1920, the Black population in the area he had purchased grew from 2,000 to nearly 9,000 in a city with a total population of 72,000. The Black community had a large working-class population as well as doctors, lawyers, and other professionals who provided services to them. Soon the Greenwood section was dubbed ā€œNegro Wall Streetā€ by Tuskegee educator Booker T. Washington.
Greenwood, now called Black Wall Street, was nearly self-sufficient with Black-owned businesses, many initially financed by Gurley, ranging from brickyards and theaters to a chartered airplane company. Gurley built the Gurley Hotel at 112 N. Greenwood and rented out spaces to smaller businesses. His other properties included a two-story building at 119 N. Greenwood, which housed the Masonic Lodge and a Black employment agency. He was also one of the founders of Vernon AME Church.

Black History is more than a month—it’s a legacy, a movement, and a continuous journey of resilience, excellence, and empowerment. This month, we honor the trailblazers who broke barriers, the visionaries who shaped history, and the everyday heroes who continue to push our culture forward. From the past to the present, Black history is rich with strength, creativity, and perseverance.

We celebrate the voices that refused to be silenced, the hands that built nations, and the minds that revolutionized industries. We recognize the artists, the activists, the inventors, the leaders, and the dreamers who paved the way for future generations. But beyond February, this is a reminder that Black history is being made every day, and we all have a role in shaping the future.

Let’s uplift, educate, and continue the work. Let’s celebrate Black excellence, unity, and progress—not just this month, but EVERY DAY.āœŠšŸæSalute!ā¤ļøšŸ–¤šŸ’š
