Discover the Remarkable Story Behind Templeton: The Whiskey that Saved a Town

“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” —Mark Twain

This quote couldn't be more fitting for the incredible tale of Templeton Rye. As the Great Depression and Prohibition struck America in the late 1920s, the small town of Templeton, Iowa, found a surprising savior in its local rye whiskey. Distilled and bootlegged by a determined community, Templeton Rye helped the town thrive while others struggled.

From farmers to priests, the entire town played a role in producing this storied spirit. Learn how Templeton Rye not only kept the town afloat but also earned a legendary reputation, even catching the eye of Al Capone himself.

Today's Templeton Rye Single Barrel 10-Year is a testament to this legacy. With warm, inviting aromas of oak, green apple, and clove, and a buttery smooth palate featuring notes of brown sugar, peppermint, and pepper flake, it’s a connoisseur's dream. The finish is bold and long-lasting, with hints of citrus and cinnamon.

In each issue of THE SPORTING LIFE, we feature sections entirely dedicated to fine spirits. Our contributors dive deep into the rich history of each beverage while also providing detailed reviews and tasting notes, offering readers a comprehensive guide to these exceptional libations.

550 years ago, Nicolaus Copernicus revolutionized our understanding of the solar system, proving that the sun, not the Earth, was the center of our universe.

In celebration of his groundbreaking work, Beretta has crafted a unique masterpiece: the 486 Copernicus shotgun.

This exquisite 12-gauge shotgun, unveiled on November 29, 2023, at Beretta's 500-year-old headquarters, symbolizes the brand’s dedication to blending tradition with innovation. The 486 Copernicus is the result of over 800 hours of painstaking craftsmanship by Beretta’s master artisans, supported by months of intensive research and development.

The shotgun features celestial engravings, with the receiver and forend iron treated to evoke deep-space hues. Silver and copper inlays of stars, planets, and asteroids grace the stock, forend, and barrels, creating a visual homage to the cosmos.

An Elephant and a Village: A Journey into the Heart of Zimbabwe

In the heart of the African plains, where beauty and brutality coexist, a gentleman hunter embarked on an unexpected adventure in Zimbabwe. Initially apprehensive due to the political upheaval and personal insecurity of the early 2000s, he soon found himself immersed in the warmth and generosity of the local people.

The true purpose of his journey unfolded as he learned about the delicate balance between wildlife and human survival. An aging bull elephant, desperate and destructive, had ravaged a village’s crops, threatening their very existence. The necessity and ethics of the hunt became clear, revealing the vital role it played in the community’s survival.

Guided by master trackers, the hunter followed the elephant through challenging terrain. The hunt concluded with a deep sense of reverence and responsibility. The village now had a crucial source of protein, and their crops were safe from further destruction. The experience underscored the interconnectedness of life and imposed a great amount of gratitude on the hunter.

Exploring the Legacy of Bob Summers: A Master Craftsman & Fly Fisherman

In an era where the technology within our pockets vies for our attention, the wisdom and experiences of past generations often appears to fade into obscurity. Yet, amidst this tide, individuals like Bob Summers stand as pillars of tradition and expertise. With 85 years of global adventures and experience, Bob embodies the artistry of crafting Tonkin cane fly rods, a tradition dating back to before the Civil War.

Tonkin bamboo, revered for its lightness and strength, became the cornerstone of American fly rod making, supplanting Calcutta bamboo by the early 1900s. Despite challenges from innovations like fiberglass rods in the 1950s, Bob and other artisans preserved the art of handcrafting bamboo rods, catering to a niche market that values both superior craftsmanship and nostalgic appeal.

Bob’s workshop in northwest Michigan is filled with artifacts and stories, reflecting his deep-rooted connections within the fly fishing community. From the iconic Adams fly pattern to his personal encounters with fly fishing legends like George Griffith, Bob’s personal collection and experiences offer a glimpse into the rich history of fly fishing.

Subscribe to THE SPORTING LIFE to stay tuned as we unravel more of Bob’s captivating tales, his philosophy on life, and his enduring legacy as a craftsman, hunter, and storyteller.
