We published Emma Lehman’s print feature from The Celebrity Issue this week to pay tribute to Shelley Duvall, paired with this exceptional portrait by .

“From the very beginning of her career,” writes, “Duvall’s appearance, from her eclectic outfits to her signature smile to her weight, had been the focus of her media coverage. As I began researching, I quickly discovered that even her Wikipedia page glossed over the extent to which she revolutionized the television industry. Nowhere was there mention of the fact that it was Duvall who pioneered the concept of original series for cable television. Little was written about her single-handed production of six seasons of “Faerie Tale Theatre,” a cultural touchstone for an entire generation. Nothing about her very own production companies, plural. Instead, more ink was spilled describing her outfit choices, the size of her teeth, and the estimated circumference of her waist.

“The “Texas Twiggy” podcast was born when I set out to create a series that would give Duvall the credit she deserved. Through audio, I hoped audiences would focus on what she had done, not what she looked like, how she dressed, or how she’d aged.“

As we survey the state of things one word keeps rising to the surface: Threat. The threats are coming from all sides. Real-world dangers from systems collapse to fascistic overreach are being stitched into every day decisions and the work we’re creating. Beyond that, there are threats to the podcast medium itself.

We’re looking for unexpected takes on the idea of threat in podcasting for the next issue of Good Tape: sharp angles, surprising stories, solutions that go beyond the usual hand-wringing. Artists, writers, audio makers, and sponsors thinking about the future of this medium — we want to hear from you.

Please see to our link in bio for more information for how to pitch. Our deadline is June 30, 2025.

Podcast fame is weird: it’s intimate, niche, and occasionally embarrassing. We spoke with several “podcast famous” creators—Alex Sujong Laughlin, Avery Trufelman, and Mike Schubert—about the line between “famous famous” and the parasocial celebrity that comes from hosting a podcast. The veteran podcasters dig into whether celebrity-led podcasts are actually a threat to indie creators, and what actually goes into making a show audiences obsess over. Full story at goodtape.com

From 19th-century society pages to today’s celebrity podcasts, our fascination with the lives of the elite is anything but new. What began as detailed accounts of outfits and overheard remarks at high-society galas has evolved into candid, unscripted conversations on podcasts that feel deeply intimate.

In our latest feature, Shane Reiner-Roth () uncovers the cultural obsession that connects society pages, talk radio, and today’s podcasting boom.

In the age of endless content, some podcasters have realized it’s not enough to only have one show. They also need to create spinoffs and derivatives off their flagship feed—a.k.a. cannibalization. As Amy Hattori writes, “By repeatedly cannibalizing their own shows and regurgitating their guests, podcast circuits become all encompassing, with nothing left to record but the totally mundane. And their fans eat it up.” Buy our latest issue to read “Frankenstein’s Podcast Monster” by Amy Hattori. Art by .mostaghim.

When “S-Town” became a genre-defining podcast in 2017 and reached over 40M downloads in its first month, the story’s characters—that is, the real people who live in Woodstock, Alabama (also known as “sh*t town”)—found their lives magnified in ways they never anticipated.

Elle Brown, former staff writer at The Guardian, takes us back to grapple with the lasting impact the show has had on the rural, and previously private, community. Elle’s reporting involved revealing conversations with Cheryl Dodson, one of the podcast’s primary sources, and Brian Reed, the creator and host.
