What you may not know is that the story behind the technology leads directly to Cobalt. 🎞️

In 1998, Alex Fernbach invented the first Array Camera in the U.S. The technology was sold to The Matrix while the film was in production and used to create its “Bullet Time” effect.

Today, Alex is an Owner and EFX Supervisor at Cobalt Stages, where that same focus on solving the requirements of the shot continues across productions. 🎥

And the “Matrix Man” nickname? That came from Harry Connick Jr. ⚡

Not every production challenge comes with an obvious answer.

Sometimes the process means building something specifically for the shot. Sometimes it means testing an approach, seeing what works on set, and adjusting from there.

That problem-solving is a big part of the work at Cobalt. Different projects bring different requirements, and the setup has to respond to what the production actually needs.

The work is serious. The process can still be fun.

Can an out-of-state company qualify for the New York Film Tax Credit? Can an independent film apply? What if only post-production happens in New York? 🎬

The answer to each of those questions may be yes, depending on the project.

The production credit is fully refundable, which means a qualifying production may receive the value of the credit even if it does not owe New York tax. 💰

Production companies headquartered outside New York may qualify when their projects meet the program requirements. Independent films may also have more than one pathway, including the standard Production Program and the Empire State Independent Production Program.

Principal photography does not always need to happen in New York for post-production expenses to qualify. Standalone post-production completed at a qualified New York facility may be eligible. 🎥

Timing matters. Applications generally need to be submitted before principal photography begins, so the incentive should be reviewed during budgeting and planning, not after production starts. ⏳

What matters is how filmmakers choose to work with them.

New production technology can change how teams plan, prepare, and execute a shoot. But the decisions behind the work still belong to the people making it.

The tools evolve. The responsibility to use them with purpose stays with the filmmakers.

The best technical choice is not always the newest tool.

In Cobalt’s NBC case study, Alex explains that the goal was not to use the most advanced option just because it was available. The goal was to choose what would be predictable, dependable, and ready for the pressure of the shoot.

Sometimes that means a proven camera package.
Sometimes it means a backup system.
Sometimes it is what Alex calls “retrotech”: a mirror, a simple fix, or the kind of resourceful thinking that protects the day. ⚙️

That is the real technical mindset: not chasing complexity, but choosing the solution that helps the production deliver.

Today, we’re remembering Dolly Parton and looking back at a production we were fortunate to support that included her.

In 2024, Dolly joined Jimmy Fallon and an extensive lineup of guest performers for NBC’s Jimmy Fallon’s Holiday Seasoning Spectacular. The special also featured “Almost Too Early For Christmas,” her holiday collaboration with Fallon.

We’re grateful to have helped produce a Christmas special that brought together so many remarkable performers, and especially meaningful today to look back on Dolly’s place in it. Cheers to Ms. Christmas, herself ❤️‍🩹

A clear plan does more than organize the first day of a shoot.

It gives every department a reference point for the decisions that follow: what needs to be prepared, what depends on another department, where additional support may be needed, and what can be resolved before it becomes an on-set problem.

For complex productions, that groundwork helps the entire crew move through the week with fewer unknowns and a clearer path to ex*****on.

A last-minute booking does not remove the need for planning. It compresses the time available to complete it.

For this production, the booking was confirmed on Saturday. The Grip and Electric list arrived on Sunday. By Monday morning, the facility was prepared for approximately 60 people, including a cast of 30, the production team, crew members, star talent and guests.

The stage setup was only one part of the work.

Cobalt also coordinated vendor support, provided black Duvetyne for the filming environment, assigned separate spaces for different production groups and created a catering workflow across two kitchens.

That coordination kept the requirements from competing for the same rooms, access points and working areas.

For production teams, the takeaway is practical: when the schedule is compressed, the value of existing infrastructure, vendor relationships and clearly defined support spaces becomes easier to measure.
