Missourians: Help stop the spotted lanternfly before it spreads. The spotted lanternfly threatens grapes, fruit crops, ornamental plants and forests. Missouri’s $4.2 billion wine and grape industry could be severely impacted if this pest becomes established.
What to look for:
• Egg masses: grayish, waxy-looking rows (often on bark, stones, vehicles)
• Nymphs (young): black with white spots, later turning red with white spots
• Adults: about 1 inch long, gray wings with black spots and colorful hind wings
Most visible at dusk or nighttime, especially on tree trunks or host plants such as tree of heaven.
Where to check:
• On tree trunks, branches and leaves
• On outdoor equipment, vehicles, rail cars or other surfaces that may serve as “hitchhiking” sites
If you see one, send an email to [email protected] and include:
• A clear, in-focus photo
• Date and exact location
Collect the insect (if possible) and store it in a sealed container for possible Missouri Department of Agriculture inspection.
Please share this post. Your eyes and reports could make a big difference in protecting Missouri’s agriculture and landscapes.
