TAMUK released the following statement following layoff announcements that occurred on Friday:

As part of Texas A&M-Kingsville's ongoing commitment to responsible financial stewardship and long-term sustainability, the University is implementing a targeted realignment of resources to meet strategic priorities.

While we have seen encouraging enrollment growth over the last two years, enrollment declines in prior years, rising costs and $6M in cuts to federal grants contribute to a budget shortfall. Additionally, a significant decline in international graduate enrollment in the College of Engineering has added $3M to the existing budget gap, totaling $9M. Our strategic realignment enables us to continue investing and remain focused on minimizing the impact on student support services and instruction.

In all, 34 filled positions and 34 unfilled positions have been eliminated. Additionally, we have intentionally reduced our operating and maintenance funds and restructured budgets to advance our strategic plan.

This rightsizing has enabled us to submit a balanced budget for the first time in seven years, ensuring that we continue to serve our mission by prioritizing access, enrollment, retention, completion, and career placement for the students we support. We have served the communities of South Texas for over a century, and this strategic realignment ensures that we continue to meet the educational needs of the region and beyond.

Update from KPD:

The Kingsville Police Department continues its investigation into the tragic discovery of a deceased newborn at the Kingsville Wal-Mart on Monday evening, July 14, 2025.
As previously reported, officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at 10:22 p.m. after a Wal-Mart employee located a newborn inside a restroom trash can. Despite lifesaving efforts by store staff and responding
officers, the infant was later pronounced deceased at Christus Spohn Hospital–Kleberg.
Initial investigation, including review of surveillance footage, led officers to identify and locate a 17-year-old female and her father, Jerry Lee Martinez, 45, of Mathis, Texas. Martinez was arrested and charged
that evening with Abandoning/Endangering a Child – Criminal Negligence and was initially given a $5,000 bond.
On Tuesday evening, two additional charges were filed against Martinez:
• Tampering with a Witness
• Tampering with Physical Evidence
Each of these charges carried an initial bond of $1,000.
On the morning of Thursday, July 17, 2025, a hearing was held in the 105th District Court before Judge Jack Pulcher. After review, the Court raised the bond amount on all three charges to $100,000 each. Jerry Lee Martinez remains in custody at the Kleberg County Jail.
At this time, specific details surrounding the new charges are not being released, as the investigation remains ongoing. The 17-year-old female is not in custody and is currently in a secure location.
The Mathis Police Department is also conducting investigations related to this case, in coordination with
Kingsville Police investigators.
Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact the Kingsville Police Department
Criminal Investigations Division at (361) 593-8849. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Kingsville

Jerry Lee Martinez, 45, of Mathis, appeared in court this morning in the case of the newborn found at the Kingsville Walmart Monday night. The newborn was pronounced dead shortly after being found. Judge Pulcher set three bonds totaling $300,000 for the charges he currently faces, including abandoning/endangering a child. If he is able to make bond, Martinez would appear in court again and would be required to wear an ankle monitor, among other requirements. Prosecutors said Martinez could face additional charges, as the investigation continues. He remains in custody at the Kleberg County Jail.

Kleberg County Judge Rudy Madrid spoke adamantly during Monday afternoon's commission meeting that he would not allow water to be discharged into Baffin Bay that would negatively affect the local ecology.
The comments came after several local groups raised issues within the past week about a South Texas Water Authority brackish water reverse osmosis facility to be located near Driscoll that broke ground on July 8.
Madrid said he not only wants to protect Baffin Bay, but also owns two acres of land near the bay, where he intends to build his “dream home."
He said STWA began exploring a local water source months ago, so that Kleberg County and other areas could become independent from the City of Corpus Christi for local drinking water.
Commissioner Chuck Schultz said local citizens seem to be confused about a true desalination facility in talks by the City of Corpus Christi, as opposed to the STWA facility planned near Driscoll. He said the Corpus facility's water source is sea water, which contains far more saline than the brackish groundwater source in Driscoll.
Madrid said the groundbreaking STWA event was for a "test well," which will undergo extensive measurements over the course of up to 24 months before the plan moves forward.
Madrid added that if extensive testing shows the water that would be discharged into Baffin Bay would be harmful, the STWA would not move forward with their contract with Seven Seas.
"We will not do anything that would hurt Baffin Bay," Madrid said.
