Charles O’Connor Johnston was born in Kirksville on Oct. 12, 1874, to William Thomas Johnson (1837-1908) and Laura (Blackman) Johnston who were natives of Tennessee. The family came to Adair County, Mo., in the early 1870s where William worked as a painter, and Laura was a dressmaker.
