As fall races begin and the weather starts to cool down, cross country runners are hitting their stride. From early morning practices to finish-lines, this sport is about so much more than just running. Want to know what makes cross country special and why so many students choose to lace up their spikes every season? Read “Why cross country” by Will Schwalb on TKC’s website.

Flory is an exchange student from Lyon, France and is spending both semesters at KHS. Flory said that she feels like the atmosphere of American football with the fans is better than in France. “I think that the supporters are [louder],” Flory said. “I think they are more intense.” Flory also said she feels as if her experience at a college game is much better than her past experiences at high school games. “I think college football is better,” Flory said. “We can see better and [the stadium] is bigger.”

TJ Thaler, woodworker, has been a part of a group of small businesses that set up their booths at Kirkwood’s annual Greentree festival since 2021. Thaler makes custom woodwork pieces out of dead and/or fallen trees and unused pieces of wood from around the community. Thaler said that the festival has helped his business in many different ways, including getting more publicity and customers.
“The publicity is really nice [and] getting custom work after the fact,” Thaler said.
Thaler said he recommends that new businesses make a booth at Greentree, praising the festival for its ability to help expand audiences.
“Absolutely, [I recommend opening a booth],” Thaler said. ”If you can get in [to Greentree], one hundred percent.”

Gwen Evans, sophomore, is on the KHS JV girls golf team and said she is grateful for the friendships she has made along the way. “I get to talk to a ton of girls who have the same hobby as me,” Evans said. “Bonding over something like golf brings you closer together with people you wouldn’t normally talk to.” She said she loves playing golf and she is very passionate about improving. While only playing for a short time, she said she wants to work to be a better player. “Seeing how much I have improved in only playing for a year makes me feel good about myself.”

Alec Gates, senior, spent this summer on a National Security Language Initiative Youth (NSLI-Y) trip in Morocco to study Arabic culture and language. He went to Morocco because he had previously been to many African and Middle Eastern countries as well as his mom is from Africa. Gates said NSLI-Y paid for 100% of his travel fees because NYSL-Y considers Arabic as a critical language in America and wants more Americans to learn the language for international relations. Gates studied Arabic for four hours a day but Gates said he also learned a lot about himself while on the trip. “By having such a diverse group of students, I learned many new things, Gates said. “I learned how to hear and accept different backgrounds and ways of life. Many people hold prejudices against people they don’t know or understand. I learned that no matter where someone comes from, they always have an interesting story to tell only if you’re willing to listen.”
