Since he was little, Tyler Sharp, senior, has strived to be a leader. He leads the swim team in the natatorium, leads his friends in daily life, and plans to lead the community as a pastor. After high school, Sharp will attend Southwest Baptist University to swim and study pastoral ministry. Sharp has a passion for helping others, and intends to help the world through his spiritual influence as a pastor.
“[As a pastor I can] teach people, walk with them through their faith and help them as people,” Sharp said. “It’s more about the personal payoff of the job for me long term [and] how I can benefit the world through it.”

Since Avery Norton, senior, was a child, she has been surrounded by photography. She grew up going to her father’s photography studio, and later picked up a camera herself. Now she has taken her childhood hobby to the next level, hoping to pursue photography or film after graduating from St. Louis Community College–Meramec. Norton said joining the Pioneer Yearbook staff as a photographer is what strengthened her passion for it.
“I really liked the environment [of yearbook], and [photography] became more serious to me,” Norton said. “[I realized] I can make a career out of this, rather than just a fun little hobby.”

Nathan Scheidt, senior, walks onto the football field with pure determination and grit; hours earlier he set up microphones for his position as a KH Choirs president. Scheidt recently committed to Creighton University and is planning to major in psychology. Scheidt said his AP Psychology class helped him discover his passion. “I feel pulled towards helping veterans with mental health issues,” Scheidt said. “I see veterans on the street a lot of the time holding signs saying, ‘homeless, please help,’ and that bothers me.”

Senior profile: You may not know the name Joey Harrison, senior, but you’re probably familiar with the smiling face holding the door open every morning before school. Propping the door open and greeting those who walk into school, throughout his high school experience Harrison said he has hoped to show other students his faith in God and the Catholic faith by being a person who strives to always show kindness, even when it’s not expected of him. “My practice of holding the door open for people came about because I was searching for a way to serve other people,” Harrison said. “While praying over what I should do, God blessed me with the idea of holding the door open for people. It wasn’t much, but it was a simple gesture of kindness and love I could show others before I started my day.” Harrison is undecided on where he wants to go to school, but said he would like to pursue a creative writing major to continue spreading joy.

The KSD Board of Education (BOE) announced the results for the recent election, April 14. Voters in KSD decided upon candidates Judy Moticka and Lisa Niemann for two open seats on the BOE, April 8. Judy Moticka was sworn in as board president, Ben Caffey as vice president and Special School District (SSD) alternate council delegate, and Chief Financial Officer Mike Romay as treasurer of the BOE beginning April 14 through June 30, when he will retire. Scott Cook will be taking Romay’s place commencing on July 1, and Lisa Nieman (photographed above) was elected as the official SSD governing council delegate. The meeting was adjourned with thanks to former board president Nikole Shurn, for being a pioneer for the BOE as the first African American board president.

“Shurn has left incredibly big shoes for me to fill, but we’ve got a great team, and it’s going to be really fun.” Moticka said.

Muslims worldwide can commemorate Ramadan by celebrating the Islamic holiday Eid Al-Fitr, March 30. Muslims complete their fasting throughout the month every day from sunrise to sunset. They celebrate by spending the day with friends, family, and loved ones, going to Eid prayer at the mosque, and feasting throughout the day.
Marwa Alrashed, sophomore, is celebrating Eid Al-Fitr this year and is a Muslim student. Alrashed said she wants more students to learn about the religious holiday and its importance.
“I think it’s essential for Kirkwood to implement Islamic holidays,” Alrashed said. “It’s important to me that people learn how I celebrate holidays different from them and for them to learn and understand my cultural and religious beliefs, especially to understand my connection with Allah [God] swt (سبحان الله وتعالى) through these holidays.”

Sophie Brown, senior, said they enjoy drawing during their free periods at KHS everyday. Brown said they are most fond of drawing subjects that they are interested in at the time, including characters from different types of media like TV shows and movies. Brown is also in Drawing I, where they’re learning about proportions within drawing.
“[Drawing I] is very fun. I love Mrs. Benben, she’s great.” said Brown. “There’s definitely no wrong way to draw, if you have a style, that’s great, keep going for it!”
