We’re headed back to the Big Iron Overland Rally this weekend!

Big Iron is one of those events we look forward to every year. There’s just something about camping around Brutus with a field full of overland rigs, especially once the sun goes down and everything starts lighting up.

We’re ready for a weekend of camping, checking out builds, catching up with friends, and seeing what everyone has brought out this year. If you’re headed to Big Iron too, keep an eye out for us and come say hi!

Who else will be at Big Iron this weekend?

We made it to the collapsed opening of the Colorado Midland’s Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel.

Standing here makes the scale of what these men accomplished almost impossible to comprehend. Completed in 1893, the tunnel stretched 9,394 feet through the Continental Divide at an elevation of nearly 11,000 feet. It took more than three years to excavate using the equipment and methods available over 130 years ago.

Unfortunately, its life as a railroad tunnel was short. Following the Colorado Midland’s financial troubles, it was renamed the Carlton Tunnel and converted into a toll road carrying Highway 104 in 1922. The tunnel was only wide enough for one vehicle at a time, making travel through it difficult. In 1943, a rockfall destroyed the tunnel, and it was never repaired for travel.

Today, we traveled part of the old Colorado Midland route and reached this incredible piece of railroad history for the first time. The tunnel may be collapsed and the rails are long gone, but the work these men left behind is still here, buried deep inside the mountain.

Places like this are exactly why we explore. The trail gets us here, but the history makes the journey mean something.

We have officially traveled part of the old Colorado Midland Railroad grade and reached the top of a route we have never explored before. Hagerman Pass sits at 11,925 feet along the Continental Divide, and now we are making our way toward the closed Busk-Ivanhoe railroad tunnel. Following abandoned railroad history through the Colorado mountains is exactly our kind of adventure.

Don’t pass by this place when going through Minturn Colorado! The vibes were fantastic, the decor was awesome, and the food was absolutely delicious 🤤

If you are willing to climb 10.285ft in elevation, this is what you will find. Side note I still have yet to find any mountain goats
