I just would like to take a moment to thank everyone for all their hard work including the staff Anthony, Shawntay, Brenda, and most importantly the WRITERS!! We wouldn't be able to do it all without you! We have almost about 20 writers, the most the Lakelander has has in a long time and you guys are the ones that make the paper great!. What has come out of this fall semester so far is fantastic! Our first Fall Issue was 8 pages, 2nd and 3rd issues 10 pages, and our current 4th issue 12 pages!! Let's keep it up everyone and make the 5th issue even a better one yet!

Metal music riot in Lakewood

Yesterday, as many are aware via news reports, a massive fight broke out near the Foundry Concert Club on Detroit Ave. in Lakewood. Over the past year, I have performed at the Foundry close to 20 times, and am good friends with many of their staff and management.
Via firsthand sources that we have spoken with, the fight has been confirmed to have been between members of the punk/metal street gang, F.S.U. (stands for, “Friends Stand United,” amongst other things) and a rival gang, reported to be the Swing on Sight Family, or S.O.S.F. Roughly 60 arrests are said to have been made, and many of the fighters will be charged with riot-related offenses.
I spoke with several witnesses to the fight, who wish to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, both from gangs and to avoid interference with the ongoing investigation. One witness, whose car was riddled with three bullets in the Foundry parking lot, explained that both gangs were followers of rival bands, whom were performing at the Foundry and nearby Now That’s Class, a small punk rock venue. The gangs met in the Foundry parking lot, where one member fired several shots into the air. One gang is said to have been carrying numerous weapons, including handguns, baseball bats, hammers, brass knuckles, and machetes, while the other gang was comparatively unarmed. The two groups exchanged verbal threats towards each other in the parking lot before charging and initiating the brawl. The Foundry, which was hosting the FireFest 2014 metal music festival, went into a “lockdown” and asked that all patrons remain inside the venue until police arrived. Contrary to initial news reports, Foundry staff assert that no shots were fired inside the venue. Police arrived and took back the area, arresting over 40, and possibly as many as 60. Four of the fighters were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, one was reported to have been stabbed in the eye by a modified, sharpened metal baseball bat.
The Foundry has not yet released a statement related to the incident, and have cancelled their Gothic Nation dance event for this evening.
