🚂 : "Give ’em Hell, Harry!" 🗣️⚓️
Did you know that one of the most famous political slogans in American history might have been born right here in Bremerton?
In June 1948, President Harry S. Truman visited the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during a whistle-stop campaign tour. While he was speaking to a massive crowd of shipyard workers, someone famously shouted out, "Give 'em hell, Harry!"
Truman reportedly replied, "I don't give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's hell!" The phrase stuck and became the unofficial battle cry for his uphill re-election campaign.

By the 1970s, the Kitsap County Fairgrounds had grown into a full-blown summer tradition — but it still held onto its small-town heart. The barns were bigger, the crowds were louder, and the midway had more neon, but the spirit of Kitsap was alive and well in every 4‑H stall, pie contest, and rodeo cheer.
Families rolled in from Silverdale, Poulsbo, Seabeck, Port Orchard, and Bainbridge in station wagons and VW buses, kids hanging out the windows, ready for elephant ears and Tilt-a-Whirl rides. The grandstands echoed with rodeo announcers and demolition derby engines, while the livestock barns buzzed with nervous kids brushing goats and sheep for judging.
Locals still remember:
- The smell of sawdust, cotton candy, and diesel in the air
- Homemade quilts and jams lined up in the exhibition hall
- The Kitsap Stampede drawing rodeo fans from across the state
- Teenagers sneaking off to the carnival lights after dark
- The thrill of seeing your name in the 4‑H results printed in the Kitsap Sun
It was the fair in full color — louder, dustier, and more alive than ever. And through it all, it remained pure Kitsap: hardworking, homegrown, and full of heart.

If you’re looking for a quiet midweek wander that feels tucked away from the noise, Anna Smith Park in East Bremerton is one of those underrated gems that deserves more love. It’s peaceful, open, and full of that soft Kitsap charm — the kind of place where you can hear the wind move through the trees and actually feel your shoulders drop a little.
The walking paths are gentle and easy, perfect for a slow reset. On clear days, the light filters through the tall pines in that classic PNW way, and the open grassy areas make it a great spot to pause, breathe, or just watch the world go by for a minute. It’s simple, it’s calm, and it’s exactly the kind of midweek grounding we all need sometimes.
