KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The body found Tuesday in North Knoxville has been identified as Desheena Kyle, a 26-year-old woman who has been missing since June, and her death has been ruled a homicide.

Kyle was reported missing in June and the investigation into her disappearance led investigators to the discovery of human remains at a residence on Sam Tillery Road on Sept. 28. Forensic pathologists at the Regional Forensic Center confirmed on Thursday morning that it was Kyle’s body.

Charges have not yet been filed in relation to her death. Police previously identified 29-year-old John Bassett, who had previously been in a relationship with Kyle as a person of interest in the case.

Bassett was arrested on drug and weapon charges at his residence on Ohio Avenue on July 7 and remains in custody.

Investigators are coordinating with the Knox County Attorney’s Office regarding prosecution in the case. The investigation remains ongoing.

Kyle was reported missing from her Wilson Road apartment on June 28 by her grandmother, who last spoke to her on June 14. The last verified sighting was on June 18, when she was seen at her apartment.

Her family and members of the community participated in a search earlier on Sept. 23.

SAGINAW TWP, MI — Police are investigating the homicide of a Saginaw Township woman, whose husband is currently in their custody.

About 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, Saginaw Township Police officers went to a residence in the 3800 block of Lamplighter Drive to check on the well-being of 49-year-old Shantina Davenport-Mitchell. A co-worker had called police after Davenport-Mitchell didn’t show up for work that day, said Police Chief Donald F. Pussehl Jr.

Officers found Davenport-Mitchell deceased inside her home.

“When we first initially found her, it was hard to tell what injuries she had,” Pussehl said. “Once the Crime Lab processed the scene and we were able to view the body, we were able to determine it was a homicide.”

Police are not yet disclosing how they believe Davenport-Mitchell was killed, but Pussehl said they believe she died on Wednesday.

Police at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday issued an advisory that they were looking for Davenport-Mitchell’s 43-year-old husband to question him.
Investigators want to question 43-year-old Lonnie Mitchell Jr. in connection with the death of his wife, 49-year-old Shantina Davenport-Mitchell.

Between 3 and 4 a.m. Thursday, police located the husband at a residence in Flint and taken into police custody without incident, Pussehl said.

Police are looking for the boyfriend of a young woman who was killed Friday night in Prince George’s County in what police are calling a domestic-related murder.

Moyonna Tillman was shot and killed in her own neighborhood in Clinton. She was 24.

Authorities have a warrant for the arrest of James Kirkland, whose photo they shared Monday. Anyone who sees Kirkland is asked to call 911.

Police did not say what exactly may have led to Tillman’s death, only that it was domestic-related.

Mercedes Lemp is executive director of My Sister’s Place in D.C., an organization dedicated to sheltering, supporting and empowering survivors of domestic violence.

She said domestic violence has risen because of the pandemic.

“The added stressors of being confined to your home, people not being able to get out, the stress of people losing jobs, the stress of having the kids at home” could all be contributing factors, Lemp said.

Lemp said survivors may feel even more alone now, so advocates want to make sure they know help and resources are never far away.

She said it’s important for those who find themselves in harm’s way to have a plan, including asking themselves where they could go at the drop of the hat to ensure their safety.

Stress added to an already toxic relationship and the availability of guns can lead to tragedy, Lemp added.

“I think the first thing is to share what’s going on with somebody that you’re close to, whether it be a family member or a friend or somebody at work,” she said.
