"The best things in life are the people we love, the places we've been and the memories we've made along the way" We are a farm family who traded farm life for more "yes days" with our sons.

What a fantastic afternoon. We toured the STEM Academy HS Nick applied to and absolutely loved the freedom of choice we saw. The school's curriculum is designed more like a junior college. The campus is centrally located downtown and partners with neighboring UT Knoxville. The school is housed in the historic L&N train depot building from 1905 and oozes character and charm.

"My kids won’t grow up with the Christmas I had. They won’t pack into Grandma and Grandpas house with every cousin, aunt, and uncle. They won’t know the loud rooms, the familiar faces, the stories that got retold every year like they were brand new. That was my childhood. That was the family I came from….

And now, so much of that feels like a life I lived with people I don’t know anymore.

It’s strange how you can come from such a big family and end up feeling so disconnected from it. No big falling out. No clear reason. Just time, distance, and many choices that slowly created space where closeness used to be.

I think about that a lot during the holidays.

There’s a quiet sadness in realizing that the family you came from, doesn’t exist in the same way anymore. And that your children won’t experience it not because of lack of love, but because life doesn’t always move in circles.

Sometimes, it just moves on.

Still, I’m trying to believe that what my kids lose in numbers, they’ll gain back another way. That even without the big gatherings, they’ll know they are loved, safe, and connected in the ways that matter most.

I can miss the family I came from while still being proud of the one I’m raising. Both truths can live side by side.

Maybe that’s just part of growing up learning that some chapters close, even the good ones, and finding meaning in the story that continues but just in a different chapter… your chapter. ❤️ "

Starting Christmas Eve morning off with a little holiday cheer in the form of a flat white with a splash of Baileys Irish Cream.

Today's plans consist of relaxing by the fire, playing card games with the family, and enjoying a meal together while we watch a Christmas movie.

How are you spending your Christmas Eve?

Merry Christmas Eve. I told our boys all day yesterday that tomorrow is my Christmas.

When I was growing up, my family celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve. We went to a candlelight Christmas service, ordered pizza, unwrapped all the gifts, and snacked on sweets my mom had been making for a month. There was laughter and chaos and love.

On Christmas morning, my dad would pick me up, and I'd celebrate Christmas with him. This is how it goes for many children with blended families. This predictable schedule was comforting. Navigating the transition between homes was effortless because it was so routine and familiar.

Now, each year on Christmas Eve, I find myself wanting to return to old traditions. We have, over time, created our own family traditions with our boys. Tonight, we will order pizza, and the boys will open one present; the predictable Christmas PJs. Then, we will watch a Christmas movie. We used to watch Polar Express but have slowly transitioned to Die Hard or The Family Man.

As our boys near high school, it's becoming more and more apparent that our time for making core childhood memories with our boys is nearing an end. Each day counts.

What are your favorite holiday traditions? I hope you are having the sweetest time reliving them with your family this month.

There are so many smells and tastes that take me right back to my youth. Ryan's grandma Bernice's sugar cookies, my grandma Bernice's Portuguese Soupish, Grandpa Gordon's clam dip, and my Grandma Edna's Apple Pie, to name a few. As I grow older, I understand the importance of passing down family recipes. They hold secrets and highlight traditions that we hold dear.

Recently, I asked my mom for her chocolate chocolate chip cake recipe. This morning, I used my new winter bundt pan and made her recipe. After pouring the badder, I licked the spatula, and I said, "This tastes like my childhood." Our boys are big sweet tooths. Something tells me they are going to love Grandma Lee Anna's chocolate chocolate chip cake.

That makes 12 pints of homemade organic elderberry syrup that will be gifted along with a carton of rainbow colored chicken eggs to friends and colleagues in the coming days.

There's a lot of crud going around right now. To ensure our health continues, I decided to make a large batch of elderberry syrup. I used a new recipe that thickened it better than the recipe that I used in the past.

I am happy I was able to use this weekend to get some homemade gifts assembled.

It's been a minute since we had a basket full of color on our kitchen counter. We sold our Alaskan chickens 2 years ago ahead of our spring 2024 move to Tennessee. Then, we waited to get chickens until we purchased this house and built a coop. We've changed our lifestyle drastically over the past couple of years. I can't say we don't miss the goats or the goat milk, but we've been able to allow our boys more freedom with their pursuits by pushing that dairy farm pause button. Tending to a flock of chickens is much easier than managing dairy animals, and I'm happy we still have that bit of a farming outlet. I'm quite sure our flock is the happiest most spoiled flock in our area.

We have 3 dozen eggs now. Our girls just started laying, and they must be quite happy. They are giving us a dozen every few days. These are the most recent dozen. Aren't they gorgeous? It's been awhile since we had such a beautiful carton.

It's our first Christmas in the new house. I've been waiting months to decorate for the holidays, and the time has finally come! Who else is married to someone who refuses to decorate until after Thanksgiving?

This Salmon Faverolle is a show stopper. She is the most timid chicken EVER, but she makes up for her extreme bashfulness with her looks. We've raised approximately 200 chickens over the years. None of them compared to this girl in regard to overall appearance. She's fun and fluffy and quirky. Isn't she lovely?

Yesterday, on , we got our very first egg since 2023 (by the end of the day, we had 3 eggs) We sold our Alaska flock of chickens in late 2023 ahead ahead of our spring 2024 move to TN. We waited until this past summer in order to get settled into our new home before building a coop and getting a new flock of chickens. In early June, we had 24 chicks (7 breeds) flown to us. We knew they were close to laying age. So, last weekend, Ryan assembled our roll away nesting boxes and mounted them in the coop. Thankful for the eggs these girls will provide us.
