For most college baseball programs, Tennessee’s 2026 season would be considered a success.

The Vols were a No. 2 seed in an NCAA regional. They won 38 games, taking series against some of the nation’s best teams.

But the expectations at Tennessee irrevocably changed in the preceding years under Tony Vitello, and, fair or not, they remained for coach Josh Elander in his first season – even after stepping in four months before the season when Vitello was hired as manager of the San Francisco Giants.

The odds were in Tennessee softball's favor going into the Women's College World Series semifinals.

The No. 7 seed Lady Vols had to lose twice to miss their first berth in the championship series since 2013 – but when faced with the very best the reigning national champions had to offer, they did just that.

Tennessee lost 5-2 to No. 2 seed Texas in the first game at Devon Park on June 1, forcing an elimination game for a trip to the finals. When the moment was bigger than it has ever been for this young Lady Vols team, they were bested by the Longhorns, who had been there, done that before.

Tennessee softball's season is over after losing twice to Texas in the Women’s College World Series semifinals.

The No. 7 seed Lady Vols dropped the second game 4-0 to the No. 2 seed Longhorns at Devon Park on June 1.

The loss also marks the end of the Lady Vols record-breaking ace, Karlyn Pickens', college career at Tennessee. In the postgame press conference, Pickens reflected on her journey with the team and the lessons she's learned on and off the field.

Tennessee softball's season is over after losing twice to Texas in the Women’s College World Series semifinals.

The No. 7 seed Lady Vols dropped the second game 4-0 to the No. 2 seed Longhorns at Devon Park on June 1. Texas had already beaten Tennessee 5-2 in the first game to force a Game 2.

In the postgame press conference, coach Karen Weekly reflected on watching Karlyn Pickens' final game as a Lady Vol and the experience she's had coaching her.
