We have our first hurricane of the 2026 season....
And it's heading our way!
This will likely make landfall near Mobile, AL late Friday.
The impacts from this will be felt for us on Saturday as bands of rain and increasing wind move in.

Atlantic's First Hurricane Forms — What Isaias Means for East Tennessee!

Good Thursday morning, my friends! I'm meteorologist Mike Witcher with eastTNweather, and we have a big development in the tropics this morning. Isaias is now a hurricane, becoming the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season! That's incredibly unusual for October 8th. Typically, we'd already have around five hurricanes by this point in the season. But now we have our first, and it's heading toward the Gulf Coast before moving inland and potentially bringing significant wind and rain impacts to East Tennessee this weekend.

Let's start with today and Friday because we still have some beautiful weather to enjoy before everything changes.

It's going to be a windy weekend as the remenants of what is now Tropical Storm Isaias heads our way.
The center of circulation should be in West and Middle Tennessee. But the wind field is large and will bring us some strong gusty wind through the day on Saturday and exiting late Sunday.
This could produce a mountain wave event with the potential for a HIGH WIND WARNING.
This will be along with the rain that will be present through the weekned.

Let's talk weekend rain chances
As the remnants of what is now Tropical Storm Isaias moves in, the rain will increase.
Remember that these percentages never tell the entire story.
It doesn't tell you...
Timing, duration, intensity and totals.
Notice the 2nd map. It shows less rain across the mountain counties.
Why?
Because with the remnants to our west, that pulls in a southeasterly flow. That's a perpendicular wind to the Smokies. That produces a down sloping wind which shuts down the rain opportunities.
Of course things can and will likely change some through the week. So make sure to check back in.

🌀 WE NOW HAVE TROPICAL STORM ISAIAS — AND THIS ONE BEARS WATCHING.
Tropical Storm Isaias formed early this morning in the southwestern Gulf with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. But it’s what happens next that has my attention: the National Hurricane Center is forecasting rapid strengthening, with Isaias expected to become a hurricane Thursday and potentially reach around 110 mph — Category 2 strength — over the central Gulf by Friday morning. The current forecast takes Isaias northeast and then north toward the northern Gulf Coast, with a potential landfall somewhere between portions of the central Gulf Coast and Florida Panhandle Friday night into Saturday. There is still considerable uncertainty in the exact track, so everyone from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle needs to keep a close eye on this one. National Hurricane Center
🌧️ And this could eventually matter for East Tennessee. The NHC says 1–3 inches of rain, with localized amounts up to 5 inches, are possible across parts of the Southeast into the Tennessee Valley. The Weather Prediction Center is also highlighting a heavy-rain and flash-flood threat across portions of the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians this weekend. National Hurricane Center
The exact track will make a HUGE difference in how much rain and wind we see here at home, so don’t lock onto one model run or one line on a map just yet.
I’ll be tracking Isaias every step of the way and what it could mean for East Tennessee this weekend.

BREAKING! New Tropical Storm! What The latest models show for East Tennessee.

Good Wednesday morning, my friends! I’m meteorologist Mike Witcher with eastTNweather, and we have some important changes in the tropics this morning. We now have Tropical Storm Isaias, and this system could potentially strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane before eventually making landfall somewhere from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle as a Category 1 hurricane Friday night into Saturday morning.

For us here in East Tennessee, the track is becoming increasingly important.
