Knox County commissioners approved Mayor Glenn Jacobs' $1 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year during their meeting on Monday night, adopting an amendment that doubles a proposed pay raise for county employees.

The approved budget includes a 6% salary increase for all county employees, which is up from the 3% raise originally proposed. According to budget documents, the additional increase will cost the county approximately $4.7 million in the next fiscal year.

Despite the change, county officials said more than $700 million remains designated for Knox County Schools in the budget. Notes attached to the budget proposal also indicate the school system has $71 million in its reserves budget, which is well above the $21 million required by the state.
