Immediate Burn Ban Issued

LA PORTE COUNTY – Citing an increased risk of fire, the La Porte County Commissioners, along with the fire chiefs of five local volunteer fire departments, have jointly issued an immediate and indefinite ban on all outdoor burning.

The ban is in effect for the jurisdictions served by the Cass-Clinton (Wanatah), LaCrosse, Hanna, Noble, and Westville Fire Departments.

In a public notice issued Wednesday, officials stated that the measure is necessary to ensure community safety. The ban prohibits all forms of open-air burning, including the use of burn barrels, campfires, and the burning of brush piles. The prohibition will remain in effect until further notice.

While the ban is comprehensive, officials have outlined specific exceptions. Residents may still use gas and charcoal grills for cooking, with the strict condition that the grills are attended at all times and are safely contained to prevent any stray sparks or embers.

The use of commercially manufactured fire pits for recreational fires may be allowed, but permission rests solely at the discretion of the local fire chief. Residents wishing to use a commercial fire pit should first contact their local fire department for guidance.

The fire departments and commissioners urge all residents to adhere to the ban to help keep the community safe.

The Regional News would like to offer its condolences to the family and friends of Les Young.

Leslie "Les" Eugene Young, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 8, 1938, in Valparaiso, Indiana, Leslie's life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his family, a storied career, and an infectious enthusiasm for life's simplest pleasures.

For 32 years, Leslie devoted his professional life to Bethlehem Steel, where his dedication and work ethic were evident to all who had the privilege of working alongside him. His care and concern for his community were also constants throughout his life.

As a successful organ transplant recipient, Leslie became a passionate advocate for organ donation. He held deep admiration and gratitude for the Gift of Life House at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota – a place that gave him renewed hope and strength.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Leslie was a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and rarely missed a professional or college basketball or football game on television. He had a special fondness for both Purdue and Indiana University teams. He was a familiar face at local games, where he could often be found cheering on his grandchildren, a rolled-up dollar bill ready to celebrate their achievements. As a longtime youth baseball coach, Leslie instilled the values of teamwork and perseverance in countless young athletes.

Leslie's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. A dedicated bird watcher and gardener, he found tranquility in the beauty of nature. His daily walks were a testament to his commitment to health and vitality, and his presence in the neighborhood will be deeply missed.

Leslie is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Collene H. Young, and their children: Donald G. Young (and wife Lori), Robert L. Young, Joy Lynn Young, and Raymond A. Young (and wife Kim). He was a guiding light to his nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy with fond memories of his warmth and wisdom. Leslie leaves behind his sister, Charolett Miller, brother-in-law, John Kieth, and sister-in-law, Edith Young, along with many cherished nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Laura Young, and his siblings, Robert L. Young, Susie Ann Kieth, and Vernon J. Young.

Those who knew Leslie would describe him as thoughtful, passionate, and loving—a man who embraced life's moments with genuine appreciation. His ability to find joy in the everyday was a gift that he shared freely, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of his company. As Henry David Thoreau once said, "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." Leslie truly saw the beauty in the world and in the people around him.

Leslie Young's life was a tapestry of enduring love, steadfast loyalty, and a zest for life that inspired everyone he met. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his unwavering support of his loved ones, and the joy he found in life's simple moments. His memory will be cherished, and his legacy will continue to shine brightly through his family and the many lives he touched.

A private family graveside will be held. Graceland Cemetery, 1505 E. Morthland Drive, Valparaiso, (219) 462-3511, is caring for the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

The Regional News would like to offer its condolences to the family and friends of Charles Crone.

Charles E. Crone, 79, a devoted educator, husband, and father, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, in La Porte, Indiana. Charles, a man known for his kind-heartedness and unwavering support for the underdog, was born on June 25, 1946, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Guy and Mary L. (Garrett) Crone.

Charles’s life was one marked by dedication and service. After completing a master’s and post-master’s degrees in Education Specialist EdS from Purdue University, he embarked on a lifelong journey as an educator. His career began in Wanatah and Westville Schools, but it was in La Porte where he found his true calling, teaching at Park and Kingsbury Schools. His favorite role was educating inmates at the Indiana Department of Corrections, where he made a profound impact on the lives of many.

With a natural leadership ability, Charles rose through the ranks to become Principal at Topeka, Honeyville, and Mill Creek Schools. He continued to shape young minds as an Assistant Principal at Boston Schools and eventually retired from Crichfield School as Principal in 2007. His passion for education and his students was evident to everyone who knew him.

Charles’s Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish and Sacred Heart Church in La Porte. His commitment to his faith was matched by his involvement in the community, where he served on the Tree Committee with the City of La Porte and was a proud member of the Indiana Teachers’ Association.

An avid Purdue fan, Charles’s love for his alma mater was only matched by his love for cars, animals, and reading. He channeled his passion for helping others into running an At-Risk program for youth, always advocating for those less fortunate.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of over 54 years, Darlene (Potrzebowski) Crone, and his loving daughter, Laura, married to James Lewis. Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Robert Crone, but his legacy of kindness, thoughtfulness, and courage will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Charles E. Crone was a man of great character, whose contributions to education and his community have left an indelible mark. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those he has left behind. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we celebrate a life well-lived and the countless lives he touched.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 101 N. Church Street, Otis, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Reverend Jerry Schweitzer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery immediately after the Mass. Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel in La Porte, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Share Foundation, PO Box 400, Rolling Prairie, Indiana 46371.
